    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    The Subject Group Public Management and Governance seeks to fill the position of Associate Professor. This is a senior appointment and requires mature candidates who understand the discipline of Public Administration. A strong teaching and learning role that encompasses curriculum development for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, research and innovation that demonstrates a strong publication record in accredited journals and community engagement experiences serve as key requirements. The candidate needs to play a scholarly leadership role to mentor and support young scholars and undertake administrative leadership.

     

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning:

    • Teaching, learning & administering of allocated modules and courses. This role includes taking leadership on curriculum matters within the School.

    Research and Innovation:

    • To be able to publish at least two Journal articles in DHET-accredited journals or Scopus-indexed journals annually. The candidate should be able to supervise masters and doctoral candidates to completion.

     Community Engagement:

    • Effective participation and initiating community engagement projects

    Attraction of Grant

    • The applicant must have been able to attract a research grant

    Mentorship

    • Track record of students mentored and those currently under mentorship

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Public Administration (NQF 10).
    •  A minimum of 6 years’ teaching, learning and research experience.
    • A minimum of 5 years’ involvement in community engagement.
    • A track record of completed masters and doctoral candidate is required.

    ADDED ADVANTAGE:

    • Professional memberships for example: South African Association of Public Administration and Management (SAAPAM), Association of Southern African Schools and Departments of Public Administration and Management (ASSADPAM), African Association of Public Administration and Management (AAPAM), International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IASIA).

    FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)

    • Possess a depth and breadth of specialist knowledge demonstrated in academic area of the core knowledge relating to Public Administration in order to teach and support learning on Public Administration courses and modules. The applicant must have supervised to completion (cumulative) a minimum of three postgraduate students (Master’s or PhDs); He/she must be an active researcher who have a minimum of ten (10) publication in accredited journals. The applicant must also show evidence of a strong community service initiatives and activities. He/she must be active or registered with the relevant professional body where applicable.
    • Practical administrative experience, and experience to lead discourses in Public Administration. The applicant will be expected to provide academic leadership and mentorship, teach, and supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate students, organise and guide research programmes, stage seminars, undertake further research in his/her area of specialisation as well as mobilise resources and high-level scholarship. He/she will also be expected to participate in University, Faculty and School activities such as curriculum development among other administrative duties.
    • Consistent track record of excellent teaching across a variety of modules and levels within Public Administration discipline, with a PhD degree in Public Administration.
    • Possesses three years of post-qualification experience at the University level and teaching experience and show evidence of scholarship as attested to by publications (at least ten journal articles) in accredited journals in the field of Public Administration, including supervision of honours and master as well as PhD students.
    • Adequate understanding and application of HEQF framework in a university environment.
    • Involvement in community engagement initiatives would be a requirement. NRF rating will serve as an added advantage

    BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

    • Evidence of publication in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
    • Academic leadership in curriculum development
    • Teaching of honours and undergraduate students as well as the Supervision of honours research projects
    • Projecting the good image of the School in terms of recruiting students and maintaining relations with local stakeholders
    • Representing the Subject Group in different committee or administrative meetings of the Faculty and School of Government Studies
    • Excellent scholarly publications in mainstream journals in international relations and have an impressive record in postgraduate supervision.
    • Ability to work with teams as well as actively espousing NWU vision, mission and values at all times.
