    Head of School

        The School of Human and Community Development brings together a diverse group of researchers, lecturers, trainers, practitioners and students in the disciplines of Psychology, Speech Pathology, Audiology, and Social Work and two research-based service delivery Centres. The School is home to some 76 academic staff, 14 Professional Administrative Staff and approximately 3400 undergraduate and 350 postgraduate students. The School is committed to developing research, theory and practice that contribute to individual and community well-being.

    • The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for the Headship of the School of Human and Community Development.

    Requirements include: 

    • a PhD, existing appointment at Associate Professor / full Professor level, good interpersonal and management skills, and a strong record of teaching and research in any discipline concerned with understanding and promoting individual and community development.
    • She/he should encourage multi-disciplinarity within the School while respecting the integrity of the individual disciplines.
    • The successful applicant would be expected to retain a commitment to teaching and research, implied in part by providing academic and intellectual vision and leadership to the School, alongside the considerable administrative and staff management workload associated with the position.
    • He/she should have a demonstrable track-record of academic and strategic leadership, be responsive to the transformation imperatives of higher education in South Africa and have hands-on management experience within a University setting.
    • The successful applicant would be expected to take the position from 01 January 2020, but the date will be negotiable depending on mandatory notice periods that may be applicable.
    • The standard period of employment is 5 years after which the candidate may seek another term or be integrated into a senior teaching position in the School, or, if the appointee is an existing member of the continuous staff, he/she will revert to his/her previous academic position.
    • The faculty accepts, however, that there may be candidates wishing to negotiate appointment for a lesser period, recognizing that the minimum appointment period would be for 3 years.
    • Remuneration: Commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications, experience and seniority of the post and will be negotiated on an individual basis.
