Key outputs and responsibilities:
- The core role of the Junior Brewer should encompass strong support towards the SDCA activities within the brewing department
- The role is intended to fulfil the development activities post the traineeship which encompasses support of brewing routines, acting roles within the brewing department, completion of KPI value adding project work and to obtain experiential learning within the brewing department
- The role follows from a formal full-time traineeship or parallel traineeship
- Through zone interaction, the BAM & BTE coach the Junior Brewers through their development
- During the employment as a Junior Brewer, the development will include a validation of progress and performance by a panel consisting of Brewing L&D Co-ordinator, Zone B&Q Leadership and representative Brewing Manager/s. This should be managed through the brewery, ZBQ and L&D
Owns the plan for personal development based on experiential learning
The Junior Brewer must own the plan for his/her development with specific reference to:
- Acting roles with agreed learning outcomes by the employee, the direct line manager, Zone coordinators and Zone L&D specialists.
- Selection and planning (with zone and line manager approval) of a Key KPI improvement project, and/or appropriate Implementation Project. Fully integrates into the brewing department/ respective acting departments throughout employment as a Junior Brewer, with full exposure to leadership levels within the department
Supporting the SDCA cycle in the Brewing Department & Shopfloor support
- The Junior Brewer should form the first line of support to the shift teams in the problem Solving Relay, prior to the BAM review
- This element of problem solving involvement should encompass finding root causes where prior reviews could not, escalate as required, as well as provide the required support and coaching on problem solving Involvement in the loop closure of root causes is also required
- The Junior Brewer supports ATO at the Operator Level, and stays compliant to the ATO plan developed in conjunction with the Brewery Leadership team in accordance to the VPO Maintenance Pillar
- The Junior Brewer must also take on the completion of relevant OWDs in support of the BAM, and drive the continuous improvement activities reached through OWDs
- The Junior Brewer is also required to provide admin and reporting support to the BAM

Acting Roles:
- The Junior Brewer is required to act in positions to gain experiential training in leading teams and applying VPO tools in order to deliver on key Departmental priorities

Operational Support
- Provide specialist support for coaching, mentoring and knowledge transfer of machine operation to shift based teams
- This will include standby, day shift and when requested after a time frame that standby will need expert advice or support

Running Repairs
- On request, partake in carrying out running repairs on plant and equipment, or support the Shift Artisans in carrying out repairs

- This may include internal resources such as Instrument
- Technicians or Inspection and coding specialist or external resources such as Contractors or Suppliers
- Where repairs indicate that major work is required, such as re-wiring a motor, this must be transferred to the engineering workshop for attention
- Verify that where running repairs have been carried out, this has addressed the problem

Key Role and Responsibilities:
Farmer Engagement:
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with commercial barley farmers, providing technical guidance on best practices, crop management, and sustainable farming techniques.
Experimental Variety Evaluation:
- Conduct trials to assess the performance of experimental barley varieties, gathering critical data on yield, disease resistance, and adaptability. Analyse results to support decision-making in variety release and commercial farming recommendations.
Field Trials & Research:
- Design, implement, and monitor field trials focused on improving barley varieties, resistance management, and crop yield. Produce reports on trial outcomes to inform strategic decisions.
Data Collection, Analysis & Technology Application:
- Work with large and complex data sets from field trials and crop performance assessments. Utilize modern agricultural technologies to improve data accuracy, generate insights, and drive improved agronomic practices.
Crop Management Support:
- Work directly with farmers on crop planning, planting, nutrient management, irrigation, pest and disease control, and harvest protocols.
Training & Knowledge Sharing:
- Conduct training sessions and workshops for farmers on agronomy practices, new barley varieties, and sustainable agriculture methods. Facilitate knowledge sharing and development within the farming community.
Collaboration & Reporting:
- Work closely with the agronomy team to develop integrated crop management strategies, report progress, and support the delivery of team objectives.
Minimum Requirements:
- Honours or Master’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, or a related field preferred.
- 3–5 years of experience in agronomy, with specific expertise in working with commercial farmers and evaluating experimental varieties.
- Proficiency in both English and Afrikaans (written and spoken).
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong analytical skills, with experience handling large and complex data sets.
- Experience and proficiency with modern agricultural technologies.
- Strong understanding of cropping systems requirements and management practices.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with farmers and team members.

- Ability to interpret and analyze basic data
