    West Coast Rock Lobster Project Coordinator

    Minimum Requirements

    • A tertiary qualification in fisheries management, marine biology, natural resources, environmental management, or related to project management.
    • Minimum 2 years as a Project Coordinator or similar experience.
    • A proven track record of working within the fisheries space.
    • Strong administrative and project management skills and work experience in managing different stakeholders.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Co-ordinate rolling out and piloting of the digital traceability system in the West Coast Rock Lobster fishery including the following:

    • Co-ordinate rolling out of the digital traceability system to all participating end-users across the chain of custody in the WCRL fishery including fishermen, skippers, fishery control officers (FCOs), factory stock controllers, freight forwarders, local outlets, customs and excise.
    • Co-ordinate effective implementation and application of the digital traceability system in the WCRL fishery as and when integrated into the DFFE permitting system.
    • Co-ordinate convening of the workshops to train the participating end-users on how to effectively use the traceability system including the fishermen, skippers, harbour monitors/inspectors, truck drivers, factory stock controllers, freight forwarders, local outlets, customs and excise.
    • Co-ordinate rolling-out of the traceability technology to all participating fishermen in the WCRL fishery in partnership with the Premier Fishing (Pty) Ltd.
    • Co-ordinate convening of the public awareness and capacity building training workshops to ensure that all identified end-users in the WCRL fishery are aware of and acquainted in using the digital traceability system.
    • Co-ordinate effective application of the traceability system by the fishery control officers (FCOs) to improve on accuracy, frequency and quality of landing slips inspections.
    • Co-ordinate and manage effective utilisation of the traceability system across the chain of custody including regular on-site interactions with the right holders, skippers, harbour inspectors, factory dispatch, retailers, customs and excise.
    • Co-ordinate monitoring and operation of the traceability system including identification and reporting of the anomalies, security risks and system errors in close collaboration with all the participating end-users across the chain of custody.
    • Co-ordinate identification and timeous reporting of all the teething issues in the traceability system to the technology developers in consultation with all the participating end-users in the WCRL fishery.
    • Co-ordinate timeous attendance to all identified teething issues in partnership with the technology developers to resolve technical and operational glitches in the traceability system.
    • Co-ordinate and oversee successful piloting and effective operational functions of the digital traceability system before being rolled-out to the entire WCRL fishery.
    • Co-ordinate curation of verifiable real-time data from the traceability system as and when requested by the implementing partners for management and research purposes.
    • Co-ordinate convening of regular in-person and virtual meetings with interested and affected stakeholders in the WCRL traceability pilot project.
    • Co-ordinate and convene regular in-person and virtual Steering Committee meetings comprised of all the key project implementing partners.
    • Represent WWF-SA in various external meetings relevant to the WCRL traceability pilot project.

    Co-ordinate implementation of the fisheries improvement projects (FIPs) in partnership with the FIPs Coordinator and the Snr Marine Scientist

    • Co-ordinate broader engagements with the WCRL stakeholders through participation and piloting of the digital traceability system as a precursor to development and implementation of the comprehensive WCRL FIP.
    • Co-ordinate and convene regular in-person and virtual meetings with the relevant fisheries stakeholders and implementing partners in the existing FIPs body of work.
    • Identify, liaise and where necessary collaborate with the relevant stakeholders to secure commitment for participation in the new FIPs body of work.
    • Co-ordinate development and effective implementation of regenerative actions identified in the existing FIPs body of work.
    • Assist the FIPs Coordinator in managing the FIPs tracking and monitoring tools to ensure that adequate progress is achieved and publicly reported.
    • Co-ordinate regular progress reporting, monitoring and evaluations using applicable platforms to keep record of improvement actions in the existing FIPs body of work.
    • Co-ordinate effective implementation of the identified improvement actions as per the work plan in partnership with the various task teams in the existing FIPs body of work.
    • Co-ordinate and convene regular in-person and virtual Steering Committee meetings comprised of the key implementing partners in various FIPs body of work.
    • Co-ordinate contracting and commitment of the third party consultants to lead in implementing identified improvement actions in the existing FIPs body of work.
    • Represent WWF-SA in various external meetings relevant to the development of the WCRL FIP and existing FIPs body of work.

    Table Mountain Water Source Partnership Manager

    Minimum Requirements

    • MSc or equivalent, in one of the following: water policy and governance, geohydrology, integrated water resource management, environmental science, ecological economics, water-wise city management, social learning and change or related fields.
    • At least 7 years’ experience of convening communities of practice and facilitating multi-stakeholder fora and water governance,
    • Technical capacity to translate water stewardship, governance and monitoring approaches into water related strategies/action plans, development of advocacy/educational materials and management of project implementation.
    • Experience in convening a community of practice or facilitating a multi-stakeholder platform or partnership. Ability to coordinate, host and lead meetings and workshops with diverse stakeholders, and facilitate discussions in large groups.  Knowledge of social learning theories and practices is a distinct advantage.
    • Knowledge of geohydrological modeling, as well as a sound understanding of the relevant groundwater policy environment, and development of education/advocacy materials is strongly recommended.
    • Prior experience with integrated catchment management, geohydrological data management, catchment rehabilitation, water conservation and demand management, water-wise city planning, community engagement and stakeholder relations are strong assets. ‘
    • Proposal development including the identification of innovative project opportunities, development of diverse teams for implementation, and the ability to promote concepts to potential funders.
    • Project management including experience in managing diverse teams, procurement, effective administration and reporting.
    • Experience in facilitating knowledge generation and exchange, documenting best practice in an accessible format for implementation by public sector, corporates and private citizens.
    • Experience in monitoring, evaluation and learning for adaptive management of strategic partnerships and projects.
    • Strong written and oral proficiency in English essential and proficiency in Afrikaans and isiXhosa is recommended.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Consolidate, support and grow the Table Mountain Water Source Partnership together with the chair and partners noting that the mission of the partnership is “to achieve improved water security in the Table Mountain Water Source Area by collaborating, based on the shared values of transparency, public accountability, the explicit involvement of Cape Town citizens, demographic diversity as well as the sharing of data, information and research outputs.”
    • Grow the Table Mountain Water Source Partnership, as a multi-stakeholder community of practice supporting groundwater resource management and governance.
    • Cultivate strategic relationships to increase engagement in the partnership with particular focus on the City of Cape Town and large users.
    • Develop networks to support citizen awareness and implementation of best practice.
    • Develop financial and institutional structures required to ensure the long-term efficacy of the work of the partnership.
    • Manage the function of the Water Source Partnership
    • Actively convene and participate in the partnership and any relevant communities of practice within them.
    • Identify needs, unlock funding opportunities and manage prioritized groundwater projects through strategic engagements with funders and development and implementation of targeted proposals with the broader partnership and with WWF.
    • Development of targeted proposals to: strengthen the sustainability of groundwater use in the City of Cape Town including proposals to: expand the groundwater dashboard and promote its use to inform sustainable public and private extraction; develop and implement supportive groundwater policy frameworks; improve citizen and corporate education and awareness; and implement nature-based solutions which improve water security.
    • Coordinate and integrate projects implemented and managed by the different members of the Water Source Partnership and provide progress reports on the activities of the partnership to fulfil funders, partners and internal WWF organizational performance reporting requirements.
    • Apply effective project management and technical input to groundwater projects implemented by WWF to ensure projects deliver successful outcomes in a timeous and locally acceptable manner.

    Facilitate knowledge generation and sharing and promote use of groundwater data in policy development and decision making

    • Build awareness and capacity for sustainable groundwater use through education campaigns and engagement with citizen groups promoting involvement in collecting groundwater data and implementation of best practice.
    • Promote expansion of the groundwater dashboard including increased use by the City of Cape Town for decision support, participation by corporates, the promotion of citizen science and inclusion of water quality.
    • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange on best practice in sustainable groundwater management with partnerships in other strategic water source areas.
    • Develop communication materials that tell the stories of the partnership and create opportunities to publicise them in collaboration with the WWF Communications team.
    • Support monitoring, evaluation and learning, documenting knowledge generation and lessons learnt in order to improve practice through adaptive management.

    National Engagement and Policy Manager

    Minimum Requirements

    • Master’s Degree in water resource management/public resource management or similar.
    • At least 10 years of professional experience.
    • Extensive experience working with government, the water sector, and the private sector on water resource management issues, with a good understanding of government water policies.
    • A good understanding of the SWSAs and the work being done to secure them.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and facilitate solutions focused engagements in a multidisciplinary and diverse working environment.
    • Strong convening and partnership development skills.
    • A sound understanding of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
    • Negotiation and diplomacy skills and ability to engage at senior management level.
    • Established networks at senior management and strategic levels within the water and environmental sectors – particularly in government departments.
    • Technical capacity to translate water stewardship approaches into water-related policies/strategies/action plans for various levels of government.
    • Ability to critically review water-related policies and legislation.
    • Strategy development expertise as well as knowledge of key issues in water resource management, water stewardship and sustainability crucial for productive government engagements.
    • Project management experience.
    • Some knowledge and experience of protected area declaration and ‘other effective area-based conservation measures' (OECMs) would be beneficial.
    • Sound knowledge of water stewardship approached and principles.
    • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial attitude, with ability to initiate new working relations and self-manage areas of work critical to the achievement of deliverables.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Support WWFs Freshwater Portfolio

    • Feed the work & experience of WWF team members in the different SWSAs into national policy and decision making relevant to securing SWSAs, bridging what WWF is doing locally with what needs to be shared nationally.
    • Serve as a national integrator of any provincial/regional freshwater policy work the WWF Freshwater team are involved in.
    • Engage in the GBF 30x30 SWSA task team, and support the development and implementation of a plan to protect 50% of the SWSA by 2030.

    Engage government:

    • Develop strategic relationships with influential government and government-linked role-players in sectors relevant to securing SWSAs and improving water security in South Africa.
    • Provide a point of strategic contact for national government entities around SWSAs.
    • Engage Catchment Management Agencies around strategic issues such as land and water resource management of SWSAs, water stewardship practices, water use efficiency etc. and advocate for their inclusion in Catchment Management Strategies.
    • Actively engage relevant government departments, portfolio committees and other strategic partners in order to advance the prioritisation of SWSAs in policy, legislation and planning – including but not limited to the revised National Water Act, National Water and Sanitation Master Plan, and the integration and mainstreaming of the “Mechanisms Framework to Secure SWSAs” into plans, strategies and policies.
    • Provide support to the DFFE Directorate of Water Sources and Wetlands Conservation on strategic matters, and the development and implementation of a national SWSA programme of work.
    • Manage the development and implementation of memorandums with relevant government departments that contribute towards securing SWSAs.
    • Engage with national government departments in Pretoria and attend strategic national water events.
    • Identify and address government policy levers, enabling conditions and inhibiting factors that can influence achievement of the WWF Freshwater Portfolio outcome and targets.

    Engage Corporates:

    • Engage with corporate head offices in Gauteng on corporate water stewardship opportunities. This will include:
    • Attending the Strategic Water Partnership Network (SWPN) meetings.
    • Promoting WWF developed freshwater tools and approaches at a national level, such as the Water Risk and Biodiversity Risk Filter Suite, water stewardship, Water Source Partnerships etc.
    • Contributing towards the implementation and continuous improvement of the Journey of Water Campaign.
    • Developing funding proposals alongside government and other stakeholders, to raise financing for the national SWSA programme of work.

    Extension Officer: Conservation Champion Programme

    Minimum Requirements

    • A tertiary qualification in agriculture science, conservation ecology, natural resources management, environmental management, or relevant field (e.g. economics, land use planning, viticulture, GIS expertise); or at least five years’ experience in an environmental management position.
    • The successful candidate must be skilled in communications (written and verbal) with strong report writing skills.
    • Excellent planning skills with strong analytical, administrative and project management skills.
    • Experience collaborating with farmers and landowners, and understanding of challenges facing them, is essential.
    • Good people skills, interacting with variety of role players and comfortable public speaking is important.
    • An interest or background in botany/ ecology with an experience in plant restoration is an advantage.

    • Duties and Responsibilities
    • The WWF Extension Officer will work closely with and report to the Senior Extension officer, with key performance indicators related to the following activities:
    • Review and provide technical input to the WWF Conservation Champion wine farm assessments:
    • Effective planning of the annual farm visit schedule to ensure that all 60+ farms are visited at least once a year.
    • During farm visit, complete the environmental assessment in collaboration with the representative from the farm which focuses on providing sound advice on the effective mitigation of any emerging environmental risks, updating the biodiversity management plans, tracking progress against previous annual targets and supporting the proactive conservation efforts of the farm – thereby ensuring that the WWF Conservation Champion criteria are maintained.
    • Negotiate and conclude the signing of WWF Landowner Agreements with all WWF Conservation Champion farms as well as identified priority stewardship properties falling within WWF stewardship focus areas.
    • Maintain positive relationships with key staff members/landowners and update team internally to ensure effective communication across various levels of engagement.

    Communication:

    • Stakeholder engagement with targeted partner organisations (such as Landcare, CapeNature Stewardship, Conservation at Work, Upper Breede Collaborative Extension Group) and/or broader fruit & wine industry bodies.
    • Coordination, planning and facilitation of learning exchange events or technical training workshops on a variety of topics and using a number of tools such as iNaturalist, carbon calculator and miniSASS, Cape Farm Mapper to name a few.
    • In collaboration with the Communications unit provide support for WWF Conservation Champion sub-brand marketing, communication and media liaison including collating footage and content from the farms to feed in to newsletter, blogs or social media copy.
    • Ensuring the brand usage is correct and integrity of the messaging is in line with the WWF Guidelines with the Conservation Champions and marketing partners.
    • Provide support to the programme manager by providing input into fundraising and reporting to key funders and partners.

    Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (including GIS)

    • GIS project oversight, data management and standardised map development for the Conservation Action or Biodiversity Management Plans per farm;
    • Monitoring and Evaluation to track improved land management over time (including GIS spatial analysis of areas under agriculture and conservation as well as additional M&E metrics or METT analysis) ;
    • Conduct biodiversity surveys in selected areas where required and capture the data in formats for internal M&E as well as user-friendly informative format for the farms to use.
    • All aspects of project management and administration (updated membership information, contact details, conservation stories, annual review of management plans)

    Stewardship:

    • Utilizing your working knowledge & experience of the different Conservation Stewardship models & relevant partners in the landscape to support landowners wanting to undertake stewardship commitments.
    • Attendance and contribution to key stakeholder forums (such as Cape Nature Stewardship review committee) to report on relevant WWF stewardship agreements & landowner engagement processes.
    • Where relevant, convening and/or chairing of quarterly meetings with the conservancies and landowner associations that WWF has facilitated within the WWF Sustainable Food System priority focus areas.

    General Legal Support

    • Expert legal support to the WWF-Land Programme and Biodiversity Stewardship Portfolio:
    • Drafting and vetting property related agreements and documentation including Offers to Purchase, Donation Agreements, etc.
    • Managing declaration processes of properties as protected areas in terms of the NEM: Protected Areas Act no. 57 of 2003.
    • Drafting and vetting property Management Agreements and liaising with Management Agencies (e.g. CapeNature, SANParks, etc.)
