    Climate Change Adaptation Specialist

    Key Responsibilities: 

    • Knowledge broker between C40 Cities and the AfDB in order to support C40 African cities under the UMDF.
    • In collaboration with AfDB and C40, develop a high-level strategy for supporting African cities mobilise climate adaptation investment.
    • Work with C40 African cities and UMDF partner cities under the C40-AfDB collaboration to develop next generations of ambitious multi-functional climate adaptation activities.
    • Work with C40 Africa cities and UMDF partner cities under the C40-AfDB collaboration to offer far upstream technical adaptation support e.g. climate risks assessments, legal reviews of project ideas, climate screening etc.
    • Work with C40 Africa cities and UMDF partner cities under the C40-AfDB collaboration to quantify financial implications of ambitious climate adaptation activities.
    • Support the Senior Manager of the CFO Network for African Cities.
    • Lead the development of relevant knowledge-sharing and capacity-building products and services related to climate adaptation financing.

    Person Specification:

    • Substantial experience in government, business or NGO sectors with a focus on climate action, climate finance, just transition, sustainability and/or climate change, and experience working with or within municipal governments;
    • Experience working in the African context on climate action, climate finance, just transition, sustainability and/or climate change;
    • Technical expertise in climate adaptation planning, delivery, finance and monitoring;
    • Experience in engaging in vertical integration processes and engaging with national authorities;
    • Understanding and familiarity Climate Action Plan (CAP) of C40 African cities will be an asset;
    • Passionate about the mission of C40 and the AfDB and have a strong interest in helping cities overcome their sustainability challenges, particularly municipal climate finance challenges;
    • Experience in fundraising and project management, including project development, scheduling, budgeting and management of subcontractors and sub-consultants;
    • International experience, particularly working across different cultures, languages, and time zones is highly desirable;
    • Language Skills: English and French (required); preference given to those that speak additional languages;
    • Excellent analytical problem-solving and strategic thinking capabilities and attention to detail for a delivery-oriented approach;

    Senior Manager, Waste to Resources (Maternity Cover)

    • The Senior Manager will be an experienced and proactive individual, able to manage their work independently and make the most of a complex portfolio in a high-profile area of C40’s work. He or she will join a team of dynamic C40 staff and will be connected to leading cities around the world. He or she will be passionate about working with a diverse range of cities to find practical solutions to climate change, particularly around waste management systems.

    Responsibilities:

    • Deliver Waste to Resources network work plan
    • Oversee delivery of the Towards Zero Waste Accelerator;
    • Directly support and advise city officials in developing and delivering projects, programmes and policies, and facilitate support through partners, including develop material for their use;
    • Collaborate closely with colleagues on the food team to support cities reduce food loss and waste;
    • Develop and convene in-person and virtual meetings and communications for C40 cities, including developing agenda content and managing logistics, to leverage city expertise and knowledge;
    • Manage internal and external partnerships to support the delivery of assistance to cities on waste systems, with a focus on zero waste and circular economy;
    • Develop communications on waste management
    • Pro-actively collaborate with colleagues in the Climate Solutions and Networks team and across C40, including with the Regions, Measurement and Planning, Research, Events, Inclusive Climate Action and City Diplomacy teams, to effectively support cities in achieving their GHG reduction goals;
    • Work with the Director of Food and Waste to support delivery of other priorities of the Food and Waste Programme;
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Person Specification:

    • Strong experience in local and/or state Government, business, research and/or NGO sectors of developing/ implementing/ advising on zero waste policies, and waste and materials management projects, preferably across multiple cities;
    • Knowledge of global best practices and different approaches to the waste hierarchy, zero waste and materials management systems preferred, preferably with an understanding of the role of urban waste and materials management policy, circular economy, and the financing of waste management programs; Technical knowledge about the avoidance and management of the above mentioned materials like food waste is an advantage. 
    • Proven ability in developing, delivering and reporting on programme plans, including contract and budget management;
    • Proven track record of working collaboratively and effectively with major global partners, such as NGOs, the corporate sector, funders and multilateral development banks;
    • Fluency in English essential; 
    • Basic skills in qualitative and quantitative data management (Basic excel skills)
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills essential, including proven ability to deliver compelling messages, develop briefings for senior leaders, and facilitate in-person workshops as well as virtual meetings or webinars;

    Manager, 24/7 Carbon Free Energy

    • The Manager will be an experienced and proactive individual, able to manage their work independently and make the most of a complex portfolio in a high-profile area of C40’s work. They will join a team of dynamic C40 staff and will be connected to leading cities around the world. They will be passionate about working with a diverse range of cities to find practical solutions to climate change, particularly around clean energy and will work with the cities to highlight their important role in the clean energy transition.

    Responsibilities: 

    • Work with the African pilot city and external consultants to provide technical assistance for developing a 24/7 CFE approach. This will require budget management, reporting and program implementation. 
    • Provide auxiliary support to the Energy & Buildings team for the delivery of the European 24/7 CFE pilots. 
    • Support the development and delivery of the communication and outreach strategy for 24/7 CFE approach for cities in the global south. 
    • Report to the funder about the grant activities, progress and outcomes achieved.
    • Advise senior colleagues within C40 and represent C40 on 24/7 CFE  policies and projects in cities externally to senior stakeholders.
    • Track and report to C40 senior management and funders on the grant budget, key performance indicators, milestones and deliverables, ensuring they are on schedule.
    • Convene as and when required in-person and virtual meetings and communications for selected C40 cities, including developing agenda content and managing logistics, to leverage city expertise and knowledge with reference to 24/7 CFE approach. 
    • Support the management of external partnership with leading institutions on 24/7 CFE and Carbon Free Energy Compact around the world to support the delivery of city commitments on clean energy.
    • Contribute to fundraising activities to expand support to cities with focus on the Global South of the Clean Energy Network and the signatories of the Renewable Energy Accelerator. 
    • Pro-actively collaborate with colleagues in the Climate Solutions and Networks team and in C40, including Climate Action Implementation, Research and Knowledge Management, Regions, City Diplomacy, Business Engagement, Finance and Communications and Events teams.

    Person Specification:

    • Understanding of Carbon Free Energy Compact and 24/7 CFE approach for cities. 
    • Experience of developing and/or implementing carbon free or renewable energy policies, programs or projects, e.g. related to municipal procurement of carbon free or renewable energy, demand side flexibility etc , preferably across multiple cities.
    • Knowledge of global best practices and different approaches to support cities in decarbonizing their energy systems and promoting carbon free energy generation and procurement and influence the energy supply at local and national scales, required.
    • Proven ability in developing, delivering and reporting on programme plans, including contract and budget management.
    • Experience in managing contracts and ensuring the timely submission of project deliverables by project teams
    • Experience of developing and implementing policy and strategy required, preferably through working in or with city governments.
    • Proven track record of working collaboratively and effectively with major global partners, such as NGOs, the corporate sector, funders and multilateral development banks.
    • Fluency in English essential; fluency in another language spoken in a C40 city strongly preferred.

    Campaigns Project Manager

    Position Description:

    • As Project Manager, you will work closely with the Senior Campaign Manager, Green Jobs and the Head of Global Campaigns to facilitate the development and delivery of a priority campaign to support the recent commitment of C40 mayors to drive the creation of 50 million good, green jobs by 2030 that would put cities on track to deliver their 1.5 degree climate action goals. 
    • We are looking for someone with proven project management skills and expertise who facilitates dynamic cross-functional working. In other words - someone who can both manage the spreadsheets and has strong people skills.
    • C40’s Campaigns aim to inspire global actors, influencers, cities and residents across the world to commit, adopt and call for the socially just and science-based climate solutions, and build support for the ambitious policies and projects C40 mayors are committed to.
    • You will work closely with issue experts from C40’s Inclusive Climate Action teams, C40’s regions and mayoral engagement team, communications and advocacy teams as well as freelancers and consultants to facilitate the effective delivery of C40 campaign activities. You will enable the team to hold workshops, share best practice as well as campaigning tools and resources. It is vital you are able to navigate complex discussions about staff resources, roles and responsibilities and bring clarity to who is doing what.
    • Your work will contribute to ensuring C40’s campaigns deliver on the needs of cities to overcome barriers to implementing ambitious and socially just climate action, and mobilises the collective voice of mayors and their partners across unions, business and civil society to move the global agenda forward towards a fair and just world where temperatures are constrained to 1.5 degrees.

    Primary responsibilities include:

    • Provide project management for each priority project which: utilises most appropriate elements of available project management methodologies and facilitation tools, e.g. Agile, Prince2, Asana, Jamboards, etc.
    • Use creative facilitation techniques and group exercises, in both online and offline spaces, to support cross-team collaboration, strategy and planning in support of bringing clarity to goals and activities to achieve them.
    • Follows an annual business planning cycle, while keeping a long view of 12-18 months ahead, including distinct phases of strategy development and quarterly quarterly delivery phases with ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and adaptation.
    • Support the development of clear staff resource plans, including  roles and responsibilities.
    • Helps ensure swift, brave, and well-informed decisions, including by working with project leads to highlight risks and choices to Director of Campaigns and other senior staff.
    • Encourages inclusive, integrated strategy development, planning, and execution processes, drawing on and using the expertise of different team members.
    • Help ensure that project plans and impact achieved are in line with the internal and external strategic objectives set by the project lead and organisation.
    • Track and report on progress of delivery and impact of activity, including contributing to dashboards and other coordination and accountability mechanisms as required.

    Support the financial management of the campaign including:

    • Ensuring project budget is spent most effectively to deliver the project plan
    • Effectively manage procurement processes for the project. 
    • Keeping a clear record of spending plans and spending.
    • Liaising with the finance team to estimate costs and make sure payments are signed off.
    • Support the organisation and facilitation of team and other meetings, including but not limited to regular team meetings, team away days, meetings to update or consult wider colleagues about the campaign, and meetings to involve external stakeholders in campaign development.
    • Use strong person to person skills to build positive relationships with all team members and colleagues, including developing a good understanding of their skills, abilities and ways of working, in order to help ensure effective team working.
    • Model strong written, verbal and listening communications skills within the team.
    • Support campaign team to communicate with key internal stakeholders, including the Regions team, the Business Planning, Measurement and Innovation, Management Team, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
    • Be aware of and follow C40’s policies and procedures, with particular attention to Risk Management, Diversity Inclusion & Anti-Racism (DIAR). 

    Person Specification:

    • Ability to successfully project manage, and report on complex projects, with substantial budgets and diverse stakeholders inside and outside an organisation.
    • Proven facilitation and coaching skills in both online and offline spaces, using a range of tools and techniques that both strengthens relationships and drives results. 
    • Experience of project management within a campaigning organisation or charity, with a broad understanding of the principles of campaigning and how different aspects of campaigning (such as advocacy, media work, mobilisation and policy research and formulation), work together.
    • Experience of applying a range of project management techniques in planning, staff resource management, implementing, monitoring and evaluating within a fast moving environment, ensuring the project responds to changes of agenda internally and externally.
    • Capability to understand legal and financial regulatory requirements, and how to ensure compliance.
    • Experience of successfully navigating a high pressure, fast paced environment and supporting individuals and teams to achieve high performance. 
    • Awareness of environmental issues.
    • Experience working across different cultures, languages and time zones is a plus
    • Fluent in English is essential; fluency in other languages is a plus
