    Plant Engineer - Hammarsdale KZN

    • RAINBOW is currently recruiting for a Plant Engineer reporting to the Engineering Manager and based at our Chicken Processing site in Hammarsdale P2.
    • The Plant Engineer will be responsible for managing, with a dedicated focus, the day-to-day maintenance operation within area of responsibility with his team (Foremen, Shift controllers and Artisans).  The role also includes Project planning- Prioritizing, scheduling, and allocation of tasks to the different disciplines of the engineering department, with the assistance of the planner, Engineering Foremen, and Project Cost control (control of approved budget and subcategories).

    Minimum Requirements:       

    • A completed Degree or Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
    • GCC Factories qualification (preferable Electrical Engineer with GCC).
    • Minimum of 8 years’ trade experience in a similar environment, of which at least 5 years was in a management category.
    • FMCG company background.

    Duties & Responsibilities    

    • Constantly looking and finding ways to improve plant efficiency and effectiveness.
    • Regularly reviews and monitor progress, taking action to reschedule and re-prioritize (must be able to “think on his/her feet”).
    • Ability to handle problems encountered with machinery and find a solution with immediacy.
    • Identifies training needs and recommends training of employees to the departmental trainer.
    • Implements Company’s disciplinary procedure, which includes written warnings and initiation of disciplinary enquiry’s where necessary.

    Project planning:

    • Strategize capex focus to reduce plant down time and improve efficiencies of machines and Production lines.
    • Ensure that health and safety requirements as per the Rainbow standard are adhere to with regards to specifying new equipment.
    • Process change control documentation with regards to all equipment and plant changes with proven records for audit purposes.
    • Manage and control the fixed asset register and ensure that it is updated as per policy and depreciation is in line with group standards.
    • Ensure that all project work in plant is carried out and completed to the highest level of trade-man ship quality and to safe food requirements.

     Maintenance:

    • Develop and implement an effective planned preventative maintenance system for the facility as well as oversee major repairs of breakdowns thus minimizing R&M costs in the region.
    • Ensure all buildings and accessories are utilized into risk, security, safety, health, HACCP AND ISO22000, 14000, 18000.
    • Risk Management: In terms of design, use and maintenance, ensure all facilities comply with health, safety, security and other legal requirements.

    Operational Engineering Management:

    • Drive the daily / weekly maintenance planning process for the plant – prioritizing, scheduling, and allocation of tasks to different disciplines of the engineering department, with the assistance of the planner.
    • Drive and deliver the agreed strategy to reduce plant down time and improve efficiencies of machines and lines.
    • Responsible for health and safety with regards to all equipment and plant to ensure a safe environment to operate and work on for all staff.
    • Constantly looking and finding ways to improve plant efficiency and effectiveness,

    Repairs and Renovations:

    • Coordinates renovations of existing facilities and the construction of new facilities.

    • Follow up on requirements for compliance ensuring that it is continuously maintained and adhered to.

    Safety and Security:

    • Ensures engineering staff follow safety rules and regulations as per the organization’s safety plan Ensure that security access points to the premises and BMS system are in good working condition.

    Financial Management:

    • Manage costs to ensure lowest cost production and the optimal utilization of assets.

    General Worker

    Purpose of the role:

    • Rainbow Chicken is actively on the lookout for a general worker to provide support on general production requirements to ensure effective running of the business.

    Qualification & Experience:

    • Grade 12 (or equivalent literacy and numeric level)

    Roles & Responsibilities:

    Production

    • To ensure all required resources are available in line with production requirement.
    • To report any mechanical/electrical issues to the Control Room/ Supervisor that may affect the smooth running of the plant.

    Process Leader x2

    ​Role Purpose:

    Maintenance Foreman - Broilers

    • RAINBOW Chicken is seeking an experienced Maintenance Foreman to join their Rustenburg team. The role involves hands-on expertise and leadership for the Engineering staff, operators, and artisan assistants, ensuring proactive maintenance, repair, and servicing of equipment.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Qualified Artisan with at least 10 years of experience in the field

    Required Experience:

    • Minimum 10 years' experience required in an FMCG, Food Manufacturing, or Operations environment

    Key Responsibilities:

    Team Leadership

    • Management of the Engineering team with regards to HR and IR issues.
    • Management of the day to day activities and out puts of all team members across shifts
    • Train and mentor his team to improve performance and reduce down time.
    • Utilize skills matrix to assess capability gaps within the maintenance team and to develop a training plan in conjunction with HR development specialist to address skills gaps.
    • Be available on call out and work on weekends or when necessary to ensure optimal performance of team and effective maintenance of equipment.
    • Organises daily meetings with engineering staff and prepares inspection reports.
    • Manages the maintenance staff in terms to facilitate attainment of KPI’s, and monitor performance of individuals in attaining KPI’s and institutes corrective action if necessary.
    • Drives company culture and morale within the team.
    • Partners with HR to recruit the staff who are technically capable and fit in with company culture to ensure that engineering team have the correct resources to maintain the facility.
    • Supports and advises engineering staff and operators on the execution of their tasks.

    • Performs work inspections and checks for completeness of tasks and compliance with legislative, SHEQ and in-house maintenance procedures.

    Budgets and Administration

    • Management of the maintenance spend against budget through daily review of budget vs. actual financial reports.
    • Provide input to the Plant Engineer to co-create and commit to an appropriate an engineering budget during the annual budgeting process.
    • Authorize stores requisitions and provide initial sign off of invoices prior to submission to plant engineer

    • Ensure that all maintenance Certificate of Compliance issued and action according to the scheduled plan and that action and task lists are recorded by the planner.

    Planned Maintenance

    • Utilise skill matrix to assess the applicability of assignments based on individual skill sets.
    • Planning and management of all planned maintenance, preventative schedules, work requests, in conjunction with the inputs received from the asset care planner.
    • Determines material, equipment, and supplies to be used and ensure that these are ordered and available at the work site, in conjunction with the input of the asset care planner.
    • Plan and manage weekend mechanical maintenance tasks and projects, based on the priority listing from the asset care plan.
    • Uses planned maintenance schedules to co-ordinates daily activities of artisans, machine operators and assistants.
    • Ensures the neatness of the workshop.
    • Develops a daily work schedule for all activities to be performed to ensure the smooth operation of the maintenance team, minimize downtime and overtime taking food safety imperatives into consideration.
    • Supervises and assigns maintenance work to contractors on a daily basis, ensuring clear allocation of responsibility and accountability.
    • Control daily job cards, by issuing to employees, receive back completed ones and verify work is done satisfactorily.

    Project  Management

    • Gives input to the Plant and Project Engineer on the feasibility of projects by analyzing technology, resources needs and market demands to ensure that project is feasible.
    • Works with the Project Engineer to ensure that the requirements of internal customers are met and to prepare accurate project specification for implementation of projects.
    • Ensure necessary manpower is available to smoothly implement projects on time and within the agreed budget.

    Repairs and Renovations

    • Coordinates renovations of existing equipment and the construction of new facilities.
    • Coordinates and inspects major contract work In area of responsibility.

    Safety and Security

    • Ensures engineering staff follow safety rules and regulations as per organization's safety plan.
    • Ensure that security access points to the premises and BMS system are in good working condition.
    • Reporting theft and dangers on the premises.
    • Ensures safety equipment is in good working order.
    • Ensure that all staff is working according to safety regulations and ensure the enforcement of food safety requirements.

    Stock Control

    • Controls the distribution of equipment and supplies amongst Mechanical artisans.
    • Ensure that non stock items are sourced and ordered according to BOP’s and RPM.
    • Assist on Bi-annual basis to verify the correctness of engineering stock levels and advise on correction where needed.

    Millwright FTC- CL

    Role Purpose:

    • This role involves the maintenance of equipment after clean out to ensure that equipment runs efficiently during production. The incumbent should also Conduct safety inspection and also conduct research and development with the purpose of upgrading the equipment for improved performance at reduction of maintenance cost. This also includes PMS (Planned Maintenance Systems) and analysis of machines to determine what spares need to be used. Preventative maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment is also the responsibility of the incumbent. Furthermore, the incumbent should assist the breakdown team in repairing and fixing breakdowns and also attend to electrical and mechanical breakdowns.

    Required Experience:

    • Minimum 5 years relevant experience (post qualification).
    • Experience in poultry industry and knowledge of poultry processing equipment would be an advantage.
    • PLC and HT experience would be an advantage.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Recognised Millwright trade test.
    • Wireman’s license added advantage.
    • Reliable vehicle and valid drivers license.

      Required Knowledge and Skills: 

    • Ability to work independently and co-ordinate projects.
    • Ability to take charge on major mechanical / electrical breakdowns with good communication and people skill.
