    Senior Engineer Energy Storage

    Local Unit & Position Description

    DNV Energy division is seeking a Senior Wind Energy Engineer to join our Project Engineering and Due Diligence (PE&DD) team in South Africa, which is part of DNV’s Renewables service line in SEMELA (Southern Europe, Middle East, Africa, Latam), and contains around 180 scientists, engineers, and environmental professionals. The dynamic working environment will require employees who are easily adaptable and have the experience and technical skillset to provide services across a wide range of active contracts, including those in the development, permitting, construction, and operational phases of project lifecycles. The wind industry in the region is a rapidly developing and evolving market.

    The Senior Wind Energy Engineer will be responsible for supporting the South African Wind team in a variety of project development and due diligence projects for the wind industry that contribute to lowering the costs and creating efficiencies for wind development in the region. Through our teams of subject matter experts, engineers, and top-notch Project Managers, we provide expert project support and technical advisory to our customers in the Wind Markets in South Africa and internationally. This position will engage within many of our wind teams to support both at the project and at the market level in the region.

    The Senior Wind Energy Engineer is expected to work as Project Manager for large wind assignments in the region and to handle complex stakeholder management. He/she will also manage large bids on behalf of DNV, supporting DNV on winning new external work. 

    Tasks may include

    • Project Manager for large-scale (GWs) wind projects or multi-technology renewables projects, and providing task-level support for larger projects, in the following areas:
    • Leading and supporting Customers with RFP and Bid submittal preparation for bidding and procurement processes, IPP procurement exercises, including feasibility studies
    • Feasibility and project qualification activities, including pre-feasibility and lease auction qualification for new market entrants
    • Engaging in stakeholder, public, and agency meetings
    • Performance of Technical Due Diligence
    • Discussing and resolving technical issues with project developers and lenders/investors, including coordinating input on such issues from internal technical specialists as necessary.
    • Writing technical reports and communicating results internally and to customers
    • Bid manager for proposals of services related to technical advisory, owners engineering and due diligence work.
    • General commercial support (awareness of market trends, participation in industry conferences)
    • Supporting business development for the services listed above, including the opportunity to establish and strengthen relationships with Customers, bringing in and evaluating new contract leads, authoring proposals, and considering where DNV’s services should change to meet the needs of the Customers.
    • Supporting the whole regional renewables team in delivering quality work to our customers, participating in continuous improvement efforts for the team, including leading tool development, process refinement, and lessons learned activities.

    Position Qualifications

    • Engineering or other technical degree (M.Sc / B.Sc), Degree in Economics will also be considered with demonstrated understanding of technical aspects and experience in financing of renewable projects
    • In depth knowledge and minimum of 7-10 years of previous experience of working in wind energy
    • Minimum 5 years of project management experience, with an understanding of technical interfaces.
    • Knowledge of general energy market and, in particular, about the renewable energy market in South Africa.
    • Experienced in Renewables IPP procurement processes, including feasibility study, concept report, Request for Qualification and Request for Proposal preparation and evaluation.
    • Familiarity with contracts (construction, supply, operations, interconnection, offtake, and/or asset management contracts).
    • Excellent English language skills (both in writing and speaking) required. 
    • Proficient in the most popular computer programs.
    • Understanding of enforceable norms and regulations within the renewable industry

    Senior Solar Consultant

    Local Unit & Position Description

    DNV – Energy Systems SEMELA’s Renewables Advisory group is seeking a Senior Solar Consultant to join our Solar Team. DNV is the world’s leading renewable energy consultant, and DNV’s Solar Middle East and Africa team holds a substantial market position for owners engineering and independent engineering services to support financing and construction of solar energy projects in Middle East and Africa. We are also very active on Technical Advisory role for large / complex IPP procurement exercises, including a mix of renewables technologies: solar, wind and storage.  Our staff are viewed as experts and thought leaders in the industry. The Senior Solar Consultant is expected to work as Project Manager or Quality Assurance for large / complex assignments in the region and to handle therefore complex stakeholder management. He/she will also manage large complex bids on behalf of DNV, supporting DNV on winning new external work. Networks with senior professionals outside DNV is also highly expected.  

    This position is based out in Cape Town and to report to Solar Middle East & Africa Team Lead based in Dubai, while collaborating structurally with storage, green hydrogen, and wind.

     Tasks May Include

    • Project Management & Project Sponsorship for Lenders Technical Advisory and Owners Engineering projects
    • Managing several stakeholders. Reviewing and negotiating EPC and O&M contracts.
    • Reviewing PPA and supporting PPA negotiations. Supporting customers through the financial closings of projects.
    • Reviewing portions of due diligence reviews, including financial model (OPEX and CAPEX) reviews
    • Coordinating with Finance and Legal teams for Tendering Renewable Power Procurement.
    • Developing and winning proposals for scopes of services related to technical advisory, owners engineering and Due diligence work.
    • Prioritizing QHSE considerations within the team to ensure safe execution and healthy work environment.
    • Integrating renewables disciplines related to solar, wind, storage, and green hydrogen
    • Initiating and coordinating technical review process among internal specialists (including civil and electrical engineering, energy assessment, technology experts, permitting, etc).
    • Coordinating input from technical specialists and reviewing / approving due diligence reports.
    • Discussing and resolving technical issues with project developers and lenders/investors, including coordinating input on such issues from internal technical specialists as necessary.
    • Participating in continuous improvement efforts for the team, including leading tool development, process refinement, and lessons learned activities.
    • Hold Customer / Key Account Manager role for local or global customer

    Position Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in engineering (ideally electrical), Masters degree Preferred. 
    • Minimum of 7 years’ experience working in the solar industry and or Minimum of 10 years’ experience working in the renewables industry.
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in technical advisory (consultancy) role
    • Technical Due Diligence and Owners Engineering experience
    • Familiarity with energy industry technology (modules, inverters, mounting system, balance of system, etc)
    • Project management and time management skills, including an ability to balance multiple projects under tight deadlines and to establish and maintain good relations with clients.
    • Solution-oriented thinking skills – identifying technical risks and formulating solutions.
    • Displaying high integrity and honesty – clients rely on DNV’s independence and its responsibility to perform a rigorous but fair review of a project.
    • Fluent in MS Office products.
    • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, including ability to write clear and detailed technical reports, presentations, and emails, and to clearly communicate complex technical issues to a non-technical audience.
    • Familiarity with contracts (construction, supply, operations, interconnection, offtake, and/or asset management contracts).
    • Business development experience. Local experience (South Africa). Energy Production Assessment (EPA) knowledge
    • Conceptual design & optimization knowledge. Understanding of budgets and financial models.

    Preferred Skills:

    • French / Spanish / Arabic speaker is a plus

    Senior Engineer Energy Storage

    Local Unit & Position Description

    You would be using your technical expertise for supporting your colleagues in the team with your knowledge on energy storage technologies, technical due diligence, conceptual design, technical specifications, procurement support, EPC/O&M contract review, design review, construction progress monitoring, testing and commissioning across the SEMELA region.

    Most of the work will be desk based, but (national and international) travel for site and customer visits will be required at times (estimated at 5% to 20% of your time, depending on the projects you are involved in).

    Main duties will include but are not limited to:

    • Execute and/or manage energy storage related advisory projects, including technology review, technical due diligence, conceptual design, technical specifications, procurement support, EPC/O&M contract review, design review, construction progress monitoring, testing and commissioning, report writing, presentations, courses, etc.
    • Support the development and maintenance of services and products related to Energy Storage.
    • Extend your external network and identify, drive and facilitate sales and market led opportunities for energy storage e.g. generating leads, quality proposals and closing deals in cooperation with the Market Area Managers for the region.
    • Analyze new business opportunities, gather market intelligence and ensure distribution of knowledge amongst relevant colleagues.
    • Achieve sales as per targets agreed with the Storage Team Lead.
    • Build an internal network to gain and share knowledge and opportunities.

    Position Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in a relevant subject
    • 5+ years’ experience in the (renewable) energy sector, of which 2+ years providing consultancy services and 2+ years in the area of energy storage systems and applications
    • Technical expertise in battery energy storage technology, electrical balance of plant design & specifications
    • Experience in Feasibility Studies and Technical Due Diligence
    • Dynamic and enthusiastic team player - co-operates will with others, shares knowledge, experience and information, and supports others in pursuit of team goals
    • Delivery and Results - completes tasks in accordance with expectations and schedule and with strong attention to details, understanding task urgency; able to juggle and manage conflicting work priorities to ensure deadlines are met.

    • Knowledge of renewables (wind, PV) technology & project development.
    • Familiarity with contracts (construction, supply, operations, interconnection, offtake, and/or asset management contracts).
