    Information Consultant REF: eRKC IC 02/2024

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor of Information Studies or equivalent degree plus at least 5 years’ experience or an Honours / or equivalent degree with at least 3 - 4 years’ experience in the field of librarianship.
    • Experience in an academic or research library environment. Experience in the Social Sciences research environment will be an added advantage.
    • Solid knowledge and experience in the use of academic electronic information resources.
    • Experience in training users on the use of information databases, bibliographic management tools and information research methodologies.
    • Working knowledge of MS Office.
    • Proficiency in speaking and writing English.
    • Good communication skills and a client satisfaction orientation.
    • Ability to work well in a team, as well as under pressure.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    The following are the key responsibilities of the Information Consultant position:

    • Maintain an embedded relationship with and provide ongoing support to researchers by conducting thorough literature searches, sourcing information materials, and attend to reference enquiries.
    • Provide current awareness service by conducting environmental scanning and alerting researchers to resources and services according to their subject areas.
    • Provide information literacy training, including training on the use of electronic resources.
    • Contribute towards the development of the HSRC’s Information Resource Collection.
    • Assist with the academic impact assessment of HSRC authored research outputs.
    • Contribute to the marketing of eRKC products and services.
    • Raise awareness about solutions and services offered by the Information Services Unit.
    • Identify new practices as part of growth and business practice improvement.
    • Achieve own personal development plan with the focus on continuous development and contribute to the development of other colleagues in the eRKC.

    Senior Research Specialist - Cape Town Durban and Pretoria

    Minimum Requirements

    • A PhD in Education, Economics, Sociology or in a related social sciences and humanities field;
    • Between two and four years of research and management experience, preferably in a research institution or a university;
    • At least seven (7) peer reviewed publications* (books, books chapters, journal articles), some of which should be sole or first authored;
    • Excellent writing skills for drafting briefing papers, reports, academic publications and for wider public dissemination of research findings;
    • Relevant quantitative and or qualitative research experience;
    • Experience of securing funding for research (will be an advantage), or willingness to learn to do so;
    • Research project management experience;
    • Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
    • Enthusiasm to manage, mentor and train junior researchers; and
    • Ability to work in a team on multidisciplinary research projects and to grow into a leadership role.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Identify key research areas in support of national, African and global South development agendas;
    • Formulate targeted research proposals and secure funding on a sustainable basis to enable policy relevant, strategic research projects;
    • Implement and manage high quality, large scale, long-term research studies with a focus on social impact;
    • Deliver high-quality results and reports to budget and deadline;
    • Stimulate public debate, civil society engagement, and develop communities of practice to ensure uptake of evidence to transform educational and economic outcomes;
    • Produce high quality knowledge outputs through publishing in accredited refereed journals, books, and book chapters and with collaborators on the African continent;
    • Ensure research impact through government and stakeholder engagement, policy briefs and research reviews;
    • Communicate research findings across multiple media platforms and at academic conferences and forums; and
    • Develop research skills and competencies through formal and informal training for self and others.
