    Underwriting Analyst

    About the role:

    • As Underwriting Analyst, you will support our South African based Underwriting team in the handling of insurance business for corporates and their brokers. Duties and responsibilities directly impact productivity, process efficiency, timeliness, profitability and accuracy of the underwriting process as well as our service delivery to customers. This position may require occasional travel for business meetings or training.

    Your main tasks:

    • To accurately capture the terms and conditions of business written in our administration systems
    • To prepare and issue documents (binders, policies, endorsements and certificates) to our customers
    • To issue invoices where required, including Insurance Premium Tax calculations and the follow-up on outstanding premium positions in close collaboration with centralized Technical Accounting team
    • To support the Underwriting unit with renewal package preparation (deal analysis of renewal accounts) and endorsement triaging and preparation
    • To regularly interact with external customers and attend client and broker meetings

    Additionally you will:

    • Compile, sort, review and verify data accuracy using source documents, detect errors, and initiate correction while following-up with customer or process owner regarding any inconsistencies found
    • Follow-up on outstanding documents or items as per internal guidelines following standard operating procedures.
    • Support the preparation of internal reports for the South African entity
    • Support Business Continuity Planning and reporting in the location

    About the team:

    • In EMEA Operations we provide support to the Swiss Re Corporate Solutions (CorSo) Underwriting Teams in handling insurance and reinsurance business for corporations and/or their captives.
    • You will be joining the local South African team, having a variety of proficiencies, skills and experience, all committed to bring success to Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. In the role of Underwriting Analyst, you will work closely with the EMEA Operations teams in centralized and offshore locations as well as your peers in other EMEA locations.

    About You:
    You have:

    • a minimum of 3 years of relevant job experience and knowledge and understanding of Re/Insurance business, particularly in servicing and coordinating lead business with focus on International Programs
    • a Bachelor's or Master's Degree
    • Property Insurance Knowledge is a requirement, additional other line of business is a plus
    • strong analytical skills and attention to detail
    • the ability to prioritize, plan, coordinate and monitor personal work
    • excellent communication skills (reading, written and verbal) in English is a requirement
    • profound computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Package (Special focus on Excel)
    • a relevant Insurance certification or diploma is a plus

    Regulatory Tax/VAT Specialist

    About the role:

    • Imagine a role where you can utilise your strong tax knowledge in a leading re/insurance company on the market, allowing you to grow further in a role with lot of independence, reporting directly to Chief Financial officer. You will take responsibility for ensuring compliance with tax legislation and effectively managing the company's tax risks.

    Main Responsibilities

    • Leading and maintaining all tax calculations (IFRS, VAT and SAM).
    • Researching tax laws, particularly those governing insurance companies.
    • Preparing monthly/ quarterly/ bi-annual and annual tax compliance.
    • Computation of annual taxes and tax planning for the following year.
    • Completion of tax audits, if required, by relevant tax authorities.
    • Assisting in preparing other financial reports.
    • Assisting in preparing analytical reports for senior management.
    • Working closely together with business to ensure IFRS requirements are properly addressed, including requirements-gathering activities, like evaluating services and systems, using a variety of internal and external data and conducting partner interviews
    • Setup and coordinate user acceptance tests and dry runs

    About the team:

    • The Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Africa Finance Team is a 3-person dynamic team managing the financial responsibilities for the organisation. Working alongside global finance teams within the broader Swiss Re Group to ensure the success of the growing South African legal entity.

    About you:

    • Bringing problem solving, interpersonal and analytical skills, this role will be a perfect fit for you. We also need:
    • University degree in the field of finance or accounting
    • Minimum 5 years of working experience in a tax function or accounting, preferably from insurance background.
    • Rich experience with accounting systems and income tax provision applications
    • Knowledge in accounting for income taxes principles under IFRS
    • Solid understanding of IFRS and local statutory principles (e.g. SAM)
    • IFRS 17 knowledge and experience is preferable
    • Willingness to travel to other Swiss Re Offices

    Head Property & Specialty Underwriting South Africa

    About the Role

    • We offer you an outstanding opportunity to lead our Underwriting team in CorSo function which will give you a big exposure to the market and wider senior management.

    You will:

    • Craft the South African and Pan African underwriting business strategy with the CEO with focus on building a profitable and sustainable book of business.
    • Own the annual business planning/budgeting process
    • Improve quality of portfolio by monitoring & steering, performing data driven analysis, guidance, tactical execution
    • Represent CorSo with external partners, i.e. clients, brokers, industry associations/conferences/panels, regulators, etc.
    • Actively develop your UW team
    • Triage new submissions and find opportunities to position Swiss Re Corporate Solutions on programmes at the earliest possible stage.
    • Underwrite the business. Assessing the risk, coverage, terms and conditions. Rate the business within the available rating tool landscape.
    • Negotiate with clients and brokers in collaboration with the client manager.

    Essentials:

    • Minimum 8+ years in underwriting at a senior level with knowledge in Property, Mining, Construction and Engineering Underwriting in Insurance and/or Broking.
    • Strong leader, able to engage, coach, mentor and motivate people
    • Deep understanding of portfolio management, risk selection and underwriting practice (including risk management, industry assessment, client risk appetite and rating methodologies)
    • Solid understanding of policy language, coupled with ability to interpret the structure of insurance contracts and challenge clauses where necessary, drawing on market knowledge
    • Exposure to working in the broader African markets
