    Engineering Lead, Digital Engineering

    Job Purpose

    Key member of the combined business and IT program team, synthesizing across all Engineering Practices (Software -; Quality -; Change & Release; DEVOPS), owning, leading, and driving the engineering practices across all delivery teams (5 to 12 teams) within the program. The Engineering Lead plans and oversees delivery, ensuring that the appropriate number and required skills of resources are available for the demand across the program and solutions are correctly developed and maintained within Group IT standards and practices, acting as Technical Lead within the Program. Oversee and maintain engineering quality and performance standards, directing the system capabilities and priorities. Lead and manage the engineering resources: software engineers, quality engineers and technical system team members within the program (50 – 80 resources), building the required capacity, capability and competencies in the Engineering team. Support platform owners within the Program or Portfolio with the management and maintenance operations of the Technical Platform for audit and stability purposes.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

    Provide expert engineering skill, mature the Software Engineering practices and shape delivery on a Program level

    • Facilitate the successful delivery and management of business solutions and features, supporting the Chief Information Officer (CIO) with expert engineering skill as Technical Engineering lead on the Program Level 
    • Mature the Software Engineering practices within Program by driving System Team capabilities (Change, Automation, Integration) and priorities on the program backlog
    • Works with key stakeholders (e.g., Product managers, CIOs) to ensure that work required to instantiate practice goals and objectives is properly prioritised and inserted into Portfolio/Program/Team backlogs
    • Has extreme focus on building capability that produces predictable, reliable and sustainable solutions. “Everything under version control” & “Automate all things”.
    • Drive a culture of relentless improvement
    • Provide, or make available, expert knowledge of prototype creation, module and solution design and development using agile methodologies, and continuous testing to enable target business capabilities / client/employee journeys
    • This role is also expected to lead the System Team capabilities and prioritisation, spending 30-50% of the time on engineering practice activities to mature the implementation across all release trains within the program
    • Is aware, and helps drives the implementation, of new and relevant technical capabilities and innovations 
    • Ensure a common sense of purpose by establishing the vision, intent and desired outcomes of the engineering practices within the Program 

    Oversee technical solutions delivery and management in line with Group IT Centre of Excellence quality and engineering standards and practices

    • Support the CIO, Release Train Engineers (RTE) and Feature Teams by overseeing / ensuring the quality of the technical solution being delivered and managing solution quality related escalations that may impact delivery
    • Accountable for the end-to-end delivery of all engineering in the identified programs in the portfolio
    • Support the IT COE with communication (in the Program) of clear expectations for the achievement of quality goals and objectives, providing explicit guidance about technical standards and practices
    • Listen and support teams in problem identification, root cause analysis, and decision-making by participating in planning, various workshops and system demonstrations during iterations of delivery by being “in the work” and participating in labs, reviews and showcases
    • Work with the System Architect/ Engineer, Product Managers, and Product Owners to establish clear content authority, continuously assist in aligning teams to the system mission and vision i.e. system Future State Architecture strategies, roadmaps as well as System Service Ownership requirements e.g. system dependencies, required service levels etc.
    • Provide technical direction to the teams by leading and guiding their output in line with the delivery and business objectives in conjunction with the CIO
    • Drive continual engineering delivery improvement across all teams in the program

    Contribute to and maintain the technical capability by implementing Software Engineering standards to maintain required stability, resilience and performance levels

    • Implement and mature the set of methods, practices, standards, guidelines and frameworks that are required to continually improve the quality of technical solutions that are delivered within the Program
    • Continually improve his/her own technical acumen and remain closely connected to changes in industry practices, in conjunction with the IT COE practices
    • Communicate the roadmaps for capability building & continuous improvement (e.g. Technical Debt refactoring, “Evergreen” technology stack, Platform roadmaps)
    • Ensure appropriate prioritisation of roadmap features, and inclusion in appropriate backlogs (Portfolio/Program/Team) by engaging and influencing Product Managers, the CIO communities: Release Train Engineers and Feature Teams
    • The voice for the technical backlog in the PI prioritisation i.e. % Supply for Feature backlog vs % Supply for Technical backlog
    • Owner of Technical Backlog prioritisation
    • Implement practices of Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery and Infrastructure as Code on the platform. i.e. progress the platform’s capabilities, driving a focus on building capability that produces predictable, reliable and sustainable solutions 
    • Work with partners from Group Information Security to ensure that best practice security standards and requirements are embedded into all engineering practices 

    Responsible for constructing the Engineering Practice team within the Program

    • Lead, manage, and mentor the Software Engineers, Quality Engineers and System Team resources within Program, ensuring the development and maintenance of highly skilled and motivated resources
    • Responsible for recruiting, maintaining and growing appropriate engineering capacity and competencies to enable the target business outcomes within schedule and within budget on a Program level
    • Manage the finances and sourcing for engineering on the Program level, working closely with the Program team (CIO, Architect) and IT COE Practices to define and plan future workforce growth and sourcing strategies, and budgeting accordingly
    • Drive engineering capacity for the Program, building the supply, pipeline, recruiting and on-boarding of resources to meet the Program’s current and future needs, appointing staff within budget constraints, complying with IT COE standards and requirements
    • Ensure availability and retention of critical skills to effectively deliver on demand, matching the most appropriate resources to the Feature Team requirement using appropriate tools and in collaboration with the IT COE guidelines
    • Oversee the management of demand and resource capacity (planning/ effective utilisation); responsible for resource utilisation and cost management of the team
    • Ensures an appropriate supply of technical experts to fill available positions in the delivery portfolios (SAFe Portfolio, Program and Team levels). 
    • Builds relationships with the team and partners
    • Ensure appropriate structures are in place to manage resource administration (Compliance/ leave approval etc.) and staff cost budgets in relation to appointment, training and development 

    Maintain the competency of the Engineering team by coaching and growing the Practice Engineering Team members

    • Lead the setting of clear expectations for the achievement of quality goals and objectives in conjunction with RTE and CIO, providing explicit guidance about individual performance expectations
    • Oversee the provision of support in the form of training, mentoring, coaching, etc. for practice team members to allow them to attain mastery in their technical skills
    • Collaborate and create opportunities for team members to acquire adjacent skills (“T-shaped employees”) and emergent skills as well as actively driving cross skilling as a strategic initiative in conjunction with other technology engineering practices
    • Ensure resource delivery quality assessments and drive the improvement of quality of resources (responsible for performance improvement/re-assigning/or managing out); acting as the escalation point for the management of improvement of performance and development of functional resources
    • Deals with technical escalations both for Change and Run the Bank
    • Set-up appropriate structure to allow for the continual measurement of performance of Engineering team members (using feedback from a wide variety of sources) and the provision of honest and objective feedback to team members on a regular basis
    • Collaborate, engage and drive IT COE capability initiatives, measures, standards of practice aimed at maintaining the practice
    • Participate and contribute to the Guilds (“Communities of Practice”) to encourage in-and-across-practice collaboration, information sharing and growth of technical competency 

    Act as change agent, driving continuous improvement and Ways of Work

    • Encourage the use of rituals and habits that help shape the effectiveness of the engineering practice and team

    • Demonstrate buy-in to SBG’s ways of work and organisational practices by supporting the implementation of new frameworks and methods to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the IT organisation
    • Drive the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Lean and automation initiatives within the IT organisation, consulting with the CTO (Group and Country), relevant CIO’s and other relevant technical stakeholders

    • Perform overall line management functions in accordance to the HC guidelines: 
      • Develop a high performing team by embedding the bank's performance process, regular performance feedback and coaching. Address poor performance. 
      • Motivate team members and ensure that they receive recognition for performance excellence by allocating the annual increase and bonuses
      • Determine development needs of the team and ensure that development opportunities (training, rotation, on-the-job learning) are budgeted for and executed
      • Maintain a succession plan for the team by reviewing the skills of the team at least twice a year and having career conversations with them

    Contribute to management of Technical Platform(s) (where Technical Platforms are owned within the Program)

    • Support the Platform Owners in ensuring that the platform is engineered to be secure, meet service level objectives in terms of availability, reliability and performance 
    • Participate in root cause of failures on the platform, putting in place remediation actions
    • Ensure that technical debt levels are always kept under control and that re-factoring / remediation / simplification takes places on a regular basis 
    • Oversee the development and maintenance of run-books for all required platform services / functions
    • Set-up appropriate processes to quality assure all code deployed onto the platform

    Preferred Qualification and Experience

    Qualifications:

    • Degree:  IT and Computer Sciences.
    • Certifications in Agile Software development methodologies and associated practices such as Continuous Integration, Software Defined Infrastructure, Evolutionary Architecture, etc.

    Experience:

    • 5 - 7 years' Business Partnering & Service Management. Proven track record to a broad spectrum of stakeholders including senior executives. Knowledge of Agile and Lean frameworks, methods and practices and experience in being a catalyst for organisational change. Experience working with cross-functional teams fostering collaboration and team work. Exposure to broad business and financial management type experience, specifically within the banking sector. Good understanding of the Standard Bank IT environment. 
    • 7 - 10 years' Solutions Engineering.
    • 5 - 7 years' Practice Management and Leadership experience. Proven ability to work effectively as both a team leader and as a member of a small team of technical staff working in an agile development environment. Track record in capability and competency building and coaching of staff is required. Minimum 3-5 years’ experience as a senior manager running a portfolio of 10+ technical experts.

    Junior Feature Analyst

    Job Purpose

    • The Feature Analyst is driven by delivering value in the form of business outcomes by collaborating within the feature team and key stakeholders. Also, responsible for ensuring that requirements map back to the business value and that the entire feature team knows what and how they are implementing towards the desired requirement.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

    • Prioritise and Plan work activities within the Feature Team
    •  Facilitate and participate in discovery/inception workshops to create a shared understanding of user needs and the potential technology solution required to deliver to these needs
    •  Work ahead of the team to get clarity on some (not all) requirements before the next iteration
    •  Create relevant analysis documentation resulting from elicitation sessions.

    DevOps Engineer

    Job Purpose
    Manages, coaches and executes the skills and competency development of Technology Engineering staff across SBG that spans across all Software Engineering disciplines. Builds an environment where continuous improvement of the technical competency development process is in focus, builds engineering excellence capability for the Group, and sets the standards, frameworks, builds the CoE and develops the toolbox

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities
    Project Planning:

    • Participate in the project-planning (PI) meetings. Providing their guidance and expertise on system options, risk, impact and costs vs. benefits. Create and share operational requirements and development forecasts to allow for timely and accurate planning of projects.

    Development:

    • Assist with and ensure the IT developers align with the pillars of Always-On, viz: Resilience, Observability, Auditability, Simplicity, and Automation. Install and configure solutions, implement reusable components, translate technical requirements, assist with all stages of test data, develop interface stubs and simulators and perform script maintenance and updates.

    Deployment:

    • Build automated deployments through the use of configuration management technology. Deploy new modules and upgrades and complete fixes within the production environment. Make modules ready for production, which entails moving them according to specific procedures and documenting knowledge transfer

    Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

    • outine application maintenance. Create requirements and procedures for implementing routine maintenance. Troubleshooting existing systems for errors and resolving those errors in a timely manner.

    Performance Management:

    Data Scientist

    Job Purpose

    Responsible for all components of product development and deployment of Data Science as a business capability for Standard Bank (CIB). The role requires involvement in problem definition, data cleansing, hypothesis generation and testing, model training and testing and finally deployment and monitoring of predicted outcomes. The candidate will need to rapidly understand business problems, internalize and contextualize domain specific information and identify deployable, pragmatic solutions that are relevant and add real business value.

    The candidate will need to be able to effectively communicate the intended processes, provide a clear understanding of what data is required and available. Also they need to ensure a clear understanding of measurement criteria for success and be able to manage expectations around deliverables. Results need to be presented to stakeholders effectively, both visually and verbally, together with the appropriate recommendations and business value clearly elucidated.

    Data

    • Directs the gathering of data for use in Data Science models, ensuring that chosen datasets best reflect the organisations goals. Performs data pre-processing including data manipulation, transformation, normalisation, standardisation, visualisation and derivation of new variables/features. Utilises advanced data analytics and mining techniques to analyse data, assessing data validity and usability; reviews data results to ensure accuracy; and communicates results and insights to stakeholders;
    • Designs various mathematical, statistical, and simulation techniques to typically large and unstructured data sets in order to answer critical business questions and create predictive solutions which drive improvement in business outcomes. Drives analytics and insights across the organisation by developing advanced statistical models and computational algorithms based on business initiatives;
    • Codes, tests and maintains scientific models and algorithms; identifies trends, patterns, and discrepancies in data; and determines additional data needed to support insight. Processes, cleanses, and verifies the integrity of data used for analysis;
    • Use data profiling and visualisation techniques using tools to understand and explain data characteristics that will inform modelling approaches. Communicate data information to business with various skill levels and in various roles, presenting trends, correlations and patterns found in complicated datasets in a manner that clearly and concisely conveys meaningful insights and defend recommendations;
    • Mines data using state-of-the-art methods. Enhances data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building data models. 

    Product

    • Creates, maintains and optimises modelling solutions that enable the forecast of quality data outcomes. Ensures that volumetric predictions are modelled so that resource requirements are optimally considered. Develops and maintains optimal evaluation techniques to ensure that modelled outcomes are rigorous and creates model performance tracking. Drives sustainable and effective modelling solutions;
    • Develops, implements, monitors and maintains a comprehensive operational IA plan, rules, methodologies and coding initiatives in order to drive IA for remediation efforts. Develops and co-ordinates a comprehensive strategy for productionalising automation software so that it is accurate and well maintained.

    Risk, Regulatory, Prudential and Compliance

    • Provides input into Data management and modelling infrastructure requirements and adheres to the organisations’s infrastructure development processes, including the management of User Acceptance Testing (UAT). Conducts regression testing across all relevant systems as required.

    Client

    • Ensure business integration through integrating model outputs into end-point production systems, where requirements must be understood and adopted relating to data collection, integration and retention requirements incorporating business requirements and knowledge of best practices.

    Technology and Infrastructure

    • Builds machine learning models from and utilises distributed data processing and analysis methodologies. Competent in Machine Learning programming in R or Python, with supplementary still in Matlab, Java, etc. Familiar with the Hadoop distributed computational platform, including broader ecosystem of tools such as HDFS / Spark / Kafka.

    People

    • Liaise and collaborate with the Data Science Guild, providing support to the entire department for its data centric needs. Collaborate with subject matter experts to select the relevant sources of information and translates the business requirements into data mining/science outcomes. Presents findings and observations to team for development of recommendations;
    • Acts as a subject matter expert from a data science perspective and provides input into all decisions relating to data science and the use thereof. Educate the organisation on data science perspectives on new approaches, such as testing hypotheses and statistical validation of results. Ensure ongoing knowledge of industry standards as well as best practice and identify gaps between these definitions/data elements and organisation data elements/definitions.

    Preferred Qualification and Experience

    Qualifications:

    • Honours' Degree in Mathematical Sciences with majors in Statistics / Applied Mathematics / Econometrics / Actuarial Sciences / Artificial Intelligence/Engineering or any other STEM qualification would be preferred;

    Experience:

    • 5 - 7 years' experience in data monetization. Ability to conceptualise and frame a problem, identify objective measures to estimate accuracy of machine learning/statistical processes and then provide detailed explanations (visually and verbally) in plain English to non-technical audiences around proposed solution. Ability to develop well defined processes that are methodical, provable, easily understood and operationalised within the production environment. Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic and multidisciplinary environment. Advise senior management in clear language about the implications of their work for the organisation;
    • 5 - 7 years' experience in data monetization / data visualization / data storytelling.  Experience in working with unstructured data (e.g. Streams, images) Understanding of data flows, data architecture, ETL and processing of structured and unstructured data. Using data mining to discover new patterns from large datasets. Implement standard and proprietary algorithms for handling and processing data. Experience with common data science toolkits, such as SAS, R, SPSS, etc. Experience with data visualisation tools, such as Power BI, Tableau, etc.
    • Business oriented individuals with proven commercially successful data related projects will be given first preference;
    • Proficiency in programming, data manipulation, application of machine learning techniques, data visualisation and story-telling;
    • Experience in structured and unstructured query languages and data science toolkits e.g. SQL, Jupyter, Zeppellin, Tableau, PowerBI, Spark, Python, R and SAS.

    Knowledge/Technical Skills/Expertise

    • Measures proficiency in using the diagramming and modelling techniques vital for requirements analyses;

    Business Domain Technology Lead - Data & Ecosystems

    Job Purpose
    To deliver the technology plan integrating Group Technology capabilities and Country technology teams via fit for purpose. Business Line, Corporate Function or platform technology toolbox. Define Toolbox capabilities to ensure adherence to Group Standards, iterate and innovate based on Country opportunities. Custodian of toolbox, govern adherence, measure efficacy of solutions in Countries. Collaborate with Country, Group execution teams to navigate, consume toolbox to deliver business value.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities
    Technology & Architecture

    • Design complex solutions as part of the technology toolbox, taking into account emerging technologies, cloud infrastructure, ensuring security standards are improved, met and risk reduced.
    • Review industry developments and existing standard and update or enhance standards for the Bank that enable robust, reusable IT services that scale across the Bank footprint.
    • Collaborate, provide input and package complex solution designs (considering the full IT stack) so that the solution is practical, useable, meets the technology plan, fit for purpose (accounts for country tiering).
    • Incorporate (in the toolbox) fit for purpose technical architecture that support the technology plan catering for tiered country requirements and objectives.
    • Set, monitor and maintain the requisite toolbox (solutions, technology tools and standards, preferred vendors) across the full lifecycle, in collaboration with countries, Business Line or Corporate Function to fit market needs 
    • Operationalise the toolbox through collaboration, training and support and oversight.
    • Manage the technology toolbox life cycle conducting regular service engagement and reviews with countries and providers to proactively identify and implement continuous service improvement plans.

    Strategy

    • Cater for the tiered based technologies per capability of service in response to Countries variation in skills and affordability and segmented clients, ensuring that the Group Business Line or Corporate Function Strategic technology plan is realised.
    • Support CIO in managing decisions relating to new or additional services as well as decisions related to toolbox enhancements. and ensure that solutions and services are value-based, factoring in resource and risk constraints.
    • Track business value and toolbox usage, verifying whether solutions and tools are fit for purpose in countries/markets to meet service management expectations and service clients adequately.
    • Review emerging trends and proactively design the toolbox roadmap to position the Bank and the countries for competitive advantage in their markets.
    • Drive the adoption of new value adding services/technologies by countries and shared execution teams, collaborating and providing guidance and specialist knowledge if required.
    • Realise strategic technology plan recommending where appropriate optimisation to achieve simplification and security profile expected for Business Line, Corporate Function or Platform, across all markets and vendor implementations.

    Client

    • Innovate technology toolbox to meet client needs and achieve optimal technology plan implementation, allowing country to win in the market. Provide countries with business ready reusable toolbox components that fit market needs, meeting requisite standards and remaining relevant and applicable for country requirements.

    Risk, Regulatory, Prudential & Compliance

    • Ensure that the technology plan for Business Line & Corporate Function meet Regulator standards both Group and support Country local regulator compliance requirements through toolbox updates / options
    • Participate in governance processes to decide deviation from toolboxes.
    • Monitor adherence against defined standards, tools and frameworks to facilitate achievement of outcomes for the business line or corporate function across all markets.

    Data

    • Provide information on the toolbox implementation, execution, local vendors and partners as required as input to crossfunctional management of information, reporting and technology across the portfolio

    People

    • Conduct strategically placed awareness campaigns in Countries and Group to ensure take up of appropriate toolboxes and services offered.
    • Manage toolbox contributions by developing and maintaining strong relationships. These include external relationships with suppliers or vendors and internal relationships with Enterprise Architects, Technology Practices, Country CIOs and IT technical teams across the organisation and markets.
    • Engage execution teams providing solutions and recommendations that will ease the adoption of standards and frameworks, acting as domain expert and advisor providing consulting services including training and workshops.
    • Ensure that appropriate skills in support of defined technology plan are understood within the execution teams for recruitment, training and development purposes and that the future technology roadmap is linked to future skills roadmap to make toolbox implementable and reduce execution risk.

    Product

    • Review the IT Blueprint, solutions and toolbox to ensure that UFSO objectives are met.
    • Identify use cases for new/and current toolbox use across the Group and countries, managing content and updates specific to the country and Group needs.
    • Integrate technology best practice and information security standards to allow for legitimate, reputable solutions supporting products across all markets.
    • Provide strategic direction for local technology vendors, to ensure alignment with Business Line or Corporate Function product standards.
    • Coordinate and ensure alignment between the Group; Country and the Business Line and or Corporate Functions product solutions. Liaising and engaging to keep them abreast of changes and evolving expectations based on the Business line strategy and technology plan.

    Preferred Qualification and Experience
    Qualifications:

    • Degree in Information Studies/ Information Technology
    • Industry related certification and membership e.g. ITIL certification

    Experience:

    • 5-7 years having gained strong experience in understanding how technology capabilities fit together to provide a solution, design, architecture, development, infrastructure. Have been exposed to managing vendors and third parties for delivery

    8-10 years:

    • Have knowledge of domain operations, and understanding of ecosystems and suppliers and broad technical knowledge of the technology, solutions and service catalogue consumed by countries.
    • Have good knowledge of domain appropriate technology strategies. Proven application of service management processes and frameworks
