    Researcher in environmental law

    Brief Description        

    Applications are invited for a vacancy as Researcher in environmental law.  Applicants will also be required to teach at both postgraduate and undergraduate level and supervise research reports at Master’s level in environmental law and related fields. The candidate may also be required to teach in other fields of law.     Writing Centre Lecturer

    Brief Description        

    The Writing Centre lecturer will work with other law teachers, and in particular our Legal Research and Writing Expert, to improve the writing abilities of our students. They will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Writing Centre and for the undergraduate writing support initiatives, both curricular and stand-alone. Candidates must have experience working with a team and a strong commitment to the value of writing development in legal education.

    Required:

    • Either a LLB degree and a minimum of two years’ experience working at a writing centre OR a Bachelor of Education (Honours) in applied linguistics/academic literacies development and a minimum of two years’ experience in higher education writing development.
    • Some experience of working with a university LMS and blended/hybrid teaching experience.

    Preferred:

    • A diploma in education
    • Prior experience of working with legal writing
    • Ability to work with a diverse student population.

    Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor In Archaeology (1 Post) School of Geography, Archaeology and Enviromental Studies

    Brief Description        

    Minimum qualification/requirement

    • A PhD in Archeology
    • A senior archaeologist with an active research program
    • Senior-level publication output, UG teaching experience, PG supervision, fundraising, and administrative portfolio management.
    • The temporal focus for this post is from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene, but research focusing on the Later Stone Age is preferred.
    • Specialisations for this position would incorporate modern quantitative methods and include (in order of preference) lithic analysis, residue analysis, ceramic analysis, archaeometallurgy, and curation and materials conservation.
    • Experience in teaching undergraduate courses face to face and online
    • A research track record of publications and postgraduate student supervision
    • Ability to attract independent research grant funding.
    • Excellent oral and written skills in English
    • Valid driver’s license (at least code B)

    Associate Professor: African Literature - School of Literature, Language and Media

    Brief Description        

    The Department of African Literature seeks to make an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. The department offers an undergraduate major in the literatures of Africa and the Black diaspora, as well as Honours, MA and PhD degrees. Founded in 1983, the department marked its 40th anniversary this year, while retaining the distinction of being the only full-scale department of African Literature on the African continent, and possibly in the world. Over these four decades, the Department of African Literature has established an international profile as one of the leading centres of African literary and cultural studies. We envisage that the successful candidate will play a central role in growing and sustaining this profile.

    Requirements: 

    • Candidates must hold a PhD in literary studies with strong focus on early 20th century African print cultures and/or early 20th century black intellectual traditions. 
    • Strong expertise in foundational African/Afrodiasporic literatures is crucial to this role. 
    • They must have experience in teaching the subject at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as supervising postgraduate research in the field.  
    • It is critical that candidates demonstrate an ability to teach two or more African regional literatures.

    Programme Administrator.4.05

    Main Purpose of the Job:

    The incumbent will coordinate a complex, interdisciplinary programme, and work closely with the GLU chairperson, the GLU Programme coordinator and the GLU executive committee at Wits. The work involves financial management and reporting to both international and domestic funders, managing financials for multiple projects, international liaison with funders, oversee the functions of the Programme coordinator such as postgraduate student liaison, coordinating and overseeing short courses, and liaising with trade unions.  The Programme administrator will also be responsible for general administrative work and financial processing related to running an international academic programme.     Veterinary Manager: Wits Research Animal Facility (WRAF) (AD07)

    Brief Description        

    The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is a research-intensive institution, seeking to increase international competitiveness and local relevance.

    The University is looking for a new veterinary manager for the Wits Research Animal Facility (WRAF), to take up the post as soon as possible.

    The purpose of the WRAF is to house and care for animals, which are used by the University in its duties of teaching and research. A wide range of species is catered for, but numerically rodents and lagomorphs are by far the most numerous. The WRAF is housed in spacious premises in the University’s Medical School and has a sub-unit on the East-Braamfontein campus. The use of animals, captive and free-ranging, for teaching and research purposes is strictly regulated by the University’s Animal Ethics Committees.

    The Director is the head of the WRAF and the Veterinary Manager reports to the Director. In turn reporting to the Veterinary Manager are several Veterinary Nurses, Animal Technicians and Attendants.

    We are looking for a South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) registered veterinarian who has, most or all, of the following experiences and attributes: 

    • Familiarity with an academic research environment;
    • First-hand experience of the use of animals in teaching and research, preferably including the conducting of his or her own research;
    • Experience of working with a wide range of animal species;
    • An innovative mindset when dealing with unforeseen experimental problems or outcomes;
    • Experience of the management of personnel and budgets;
    • An ability to interact amicably with a range of persons, including academic, administrative and maintenance staff, members of the public and animal rights groups.
