Join us in building the next generation Control Plane API Orchestration service platform that runs Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and web service. Our platform handles a significant load of Internet traffic generated by internal and external customers that build their platforms on EC2.
On any given day we use Java, Kotlin, Python, Ruby as well as various Native AWS services and Amazon-internal tools. We don't expect you to be an expert in, or know all these technologies listed, but we do expect you to be excited to learn about them. As an experienced engineer in this team, you will be expected to deliver high quality software designs and solutions to ambiguous, complex problems.
As an Amazonian, you’ll enjoy interacting with talented engineers globally as you build out API Orchestration features for teams across EC2 and AWS. We follow a DevOps model and so our team is empowered to own the full development and support life-cycle of their systems. Our team operates like start-ups in that we own and drive a portfolio of services which includes everything from developing the long term vision for our API Orchestration product through to deciding on what technologies and development methodology or processes to adopt.

This position involves on-call responsibilities. This is typically once every 6 weeks. We don’t like to be paged unnecessarily and we strive to keep this down and ensure our systems are fault tolerant. Our team values work-life balance and respect each other’s time.
A successful Software Development Engineer will have good design skills, an excellent ability to solve problems, good communication skills and a desire to be a key technical contributor. The software you will be responsible for will require a breadth of technical development knowledge (i.e. distributed systems, synchronous API orchestration, scalability, availability).

Amazon internships are full-time (40 hours/week) and vary in length to fit in with your university’s program. Some are 2-3 months, others can be 6 months or even up to 12 months. Build the systems that optimize how EC2 matches requests for Instances with the underlying compute capacity. EC2 Placement is seeking talented engineers to build the online and offline optimization systems for compute workload scheduling, and the customer capabilities to better manage those workloads. Amazon EC2 provides on-demand scalable compute capacity, and powers some of the largest services in the world. You will collaborate with a top-tier community of engineers to build systems to improve how customers are able to access EC2 compute resources.
The successful candidate will have strong software engineering experience, with a passion for thinking about, building and testing distributed systems. You have an interest in how optimization techniques can be applied to large-scale problems. You have demonstrated experience working with a team to design, build and operate large-scale systems. With strong engineering fundamentals, an analytical and data-driven approach to your work, and strong communication skills, you have the ability to collaborate well to deliver results.
Most of our team is based in Cape Town. Under normal circumstances, we mostly work from the office but are very flexible if you need to work from home occasionally. From time-to-time, we work with our colleagues across the world meaning we accommodate the different time zones.
We rotate our on-call responsibilities which means that every 4-6 weeks, you would need to be contactable outside of office hours in order to respond if a problem arises with your service. We are very understanding of personal circumstances, and so teams always endeavour to take this into consideration when building a fair on-call roster. You can discuss in more detail with your Manager once you’ve joined.

Amazon is looking for a Human Resource Business Partner to work virtually from home, reporting to the Senior HRBP, you will play a critical role in delivering the HR plan at our Customer Service (CS) site in Cape Town. You will work closely with the HR team supporting across the site to help ensure great experience for our associates and managers.
General Scope of Role:
The HRBP supports the operation of the site by contributing to the delivery of the world-wide CS HR plan, working closely with the HR team and operations.
As a HRBP, you will be regarded as the subject matter expert with full site program ownership/project management of standard core people processes. You will manage, plan and set your own priorities based on overall direction from the HRM. You will also execute standard company-wide programs and develop plans to localize where appropriate, actively seeking opportunities for invention, simplification and problem solving of standard work programs. You are the principal associate facing role for HR, linking back to the broader, global HR team for escalations, reporting, updates and opportunities for HR process improvements.
