    Responsibilities for this job:

     Teaching: based on own knowledge and expertise in the discipline. This could include consultation, collaboration involvement in policy processes  or projects.

    Administration:

    •  Become familiar with the relevant University policies and to implement them appropriately. 
    • Responsible for teaching administration within the discipline as per teaching responsibilities delegated by the Dean & Head of School. 
    • Manage own teaching & research programs efficiently; keeping adequate records of teaching; student performance and other aspects of       functioning;
    • conduct other administrative duties as delegated by the Head of discipline/Academic Leader;
    • Maintain own professional registration, if applicable.

    General: 

    • Show willingness to embrace the ethos and philosophy of the School and the University;
    • any other responsibilities and functions that may be delegated by the Head of Discipline; Academic Leader or Dean & Head of School within the scope of the competencies of this profile.        

    Minimum requirements:

    • All applicants must have an undergraduate degree in Pharmacy;

    Senior Lecturer/Lecturer (Geological Sciences)

    Job description

    The School  is inviting applications for a position in any relevant field of Geological Science, as aligned with the current discipline of Geological Sciences curriculum found here: https://ww3.caes.ukzn.ac.za/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/CAES-Handbook-2024-1.pdf. 

    The School has an active group of academic staff contributing to research and teaching in wide-ranging areas of Geological Sciences. The incumbent will be required to teach theoretical and field-based discipline-specific modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to conduct research in Geological Sciences. A sound knowledge of southern African geology will be advantageous. S/he will be expected to establish a research programme, attract external research funds and supervise Honours and postgraduate students. The incumbent will be expected to have a track record that demonstrate success in peer-reviewed publishing and postgraduate supervision. S/he will be required to develop strong links with industry to promote scholarship and research in their area of expertise.

     The Discipline of Geological Sciences has a variety of equipment to facilitate research. These include an analytical laboratory with Panalytical XRF and XRD equipment; a Perkin Elmer Nexion ICP-MS with LA system and a SGE-USGS heating-freezing stage for fluid inclusion studies; a state of the art paleomagnetic laboratory equipped with JR-6A Spinner Magnetometer, LDA5 AF Demagnetizer, a dual-blade rock saw and  soon to be acquired MFK2-FA Spinner Kappabridge susceptibility bridge for conducting AMS analyses; a fully equipped thin-section laboratory; a marine sedimentology laboratory; and a fully equipped soil and rock engineering laboratory with a variety of relevant testing equipment.

    The incumbent will report to the Academic Leader: Geological Sciences

    Minimum requirements

    Senior Lecturer 

    •  A PhD degree in Geological Science or a closely related field
    •  Evidence of appropriate teaching experience in a relevant field at tertiary level
    • Evidence of current and sustained research publication record in quality scientific journals appropriate for the level
    • A track record of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters and/or PhD level appropriate for the level
    • Demonstrated ability to apply for research grants, either as the Principal Investigator or as a member of a team

    Lecturer:

    • A PhD degree in Geological Science or closely related field; or Master’s degree in Geological Sciences, with evidence of submission of PhD for examination 
    • Experience in teaching in a relevant field at tertiary institution
    • Evidence of presentations at national or international conferences
    • Current research activity as evidenced by a publication in a quality scientific journal

    The current context of Higher Education in the South Africa is seeing an increasing focus on the student voice, with funding pressures and competition at a new level. Showing the value of a particular university’s degree and overall offering is more and more critical. In response to this, the University has developed a strategic approach to handling the entire student life cycle that is building on its strengths and positioning it as a leader in the sector.

    The role of Pro Vice Chancellor (Student Services) will be to oversee the full student life cycle at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, leading on relevant areas including the whole of the student pastoral journey, including student residential life, extracurricular engagement, and student innovations.

    The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Services):

    •  manages the administration of the Directorate of Students Services (SSD) for the University of KwaZulu-Natal,
    •  serves as an advocate for students, and
    •  shares information with students, colleagues, and other interested parties that promote student success, and wellbeing.

    The incumbent is a full member of the senior leadership team, serves on the Executive Management Committee, and reports to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal.  With other members of the Executive Management Committee, the Pro Vice-Chancellor will lead the creation of a culture of learning and engagement for UKZN students by applying student development theories and learning outcomes that promote students' academic and personal success, thereby increasing UKZN student employability.

    Minimum requirements A PhD or Doctoral Degree

    •  Fifteen (15) year of relevant and appropriate experience of which eight (8) need to have been at a Senior management level.
    •  Demonstrable knowledge and experience of student funding, financial aid, student discipline, student accommodation and student wellness programmes.
    •  Experience of interaction with student governance in higher education and an understanding of student culture in a transforming institution.

    Personal and Leadership Attributes

    • The incumbent must be an individual with strong interpersonal capabilities, who is an institutional leader, able to foster interpersonal relationships within the Colleges and Professional Services Sector involving staff across the institution and with stakeholders.

    In addition, s/he would be expected to have:

    •    the ability to inspire and motivate;

    The Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of College is the highest academic leadership position within the University’s College structure and is responsible for leading the academic and research strategy and realising the academic mandate of the University. It is therefore imperative that the DVC leads by example. The role is however dual in nature namely College specific and University- wide, and as part of the Executive Management of the University, the DVC is also responsible for University-wide strategic, financial and risk planning and the successful governance and management of the University in line with its vision, mission and goals.
    At College level the DVC oversees the implementation of the institutional strategic plan focusing on the key areas of research, scholarship, teaching and community engagement; ensures proper management and direction of financial, staffing and physical resources, champions employment equity and transformation, and implements consultative, participatory and transparent systems of governance to promote collegiality and build strong teams.

    Minimum requirements

    Full Professor for five years with experience in an academic/research leadership role;

    •  PhD/Doctorate Degree in a discipline relevant to the College;
    •  Demonstrated track record of fundraising and attracting competitive research grants;
    •  Five (5) years’ experience in the leadership of a school, faculty or business unit of significant size and complexity. This would include being responsible for the human resources and financial management of the College;
    •  Five (5) years’ experience of management and development of staff in the achievement of institutional objectives;
    • An established academic and internationally renowneEvidence of research impact;
      • Academic Awards;
      • Visiting Professorships/Fellowships;
      • Invitations to present papers at national and international conferences;
      • Serving on Boards of scholarly journals etc.
    •  Understanding of the higher education environment in SA and the relevant legislation;
    •  A broad understanding of developments in the various disciplines within the relevant College at a regional, national and global level.
    • Internal candidates will retain their substantive post, to which they will revert on conclusion of the five-year appointment. Appointment of external candidates may be underpinned by a permanent substantive professorial appointment in their academic discipline.

    • The successful candidate must be a credible individual of unquestionable integrity with strong interpersonal and financial capabilities, who is an institutional leader and is able to establish substantive networks internally and externally with different stakeholders.

    In addition, s/he would be expected to:
