The School has an active group of academic staff contributing to research and teaching in wide-ranging areas of Geological Sciences. The incumbent will be required to teach theoretical and field-based discipline-specific modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to conduct research in Geological Sciences. A sound knowledge of southern African geology will be advantageous. S/he will be expected to establish a research programme, attract external research funds and supervise Honours and postgraduate students. The incumbent will be expected to have a track record that demonstrate success in peer-reviewed publishing and postgraduate supervision. S/he will be required to develop strong links with industry to promote scholarship and research in their area of expertise.
The Discipline of Geological Sciences has a variety of equipment to facilitate research. These include an analytical laboratory with Panalytical XRF and XRD equipment; a Perkin Elmer Nexion ICP-MS with LA system and a SGE-USGS heating-freezing stage for fluid inclusion studies; a state of the art paleomagnetic laboratory equipped with JR-6A Spinner Magnetometer, LDA5 AF Demagnetizer, a dual-blade rock saw and soon to be acquired MFK2-FA Spinner Kappabridge susceptibility bridge for conducting AMS analyses; a fully equipped thin-section laboratory; a marine sedimentology laboratory; and a fully equipped soil and rock engineering laboratory with a variety of relevant testing equipment.

The incumbent will be required to teach theoretical and field-based modules, using curricula in keeping with modern developments in the field, and will assist in developing discipline-wide postgraduate teaching programmes. In addition to teaching, s/he will be expected to develop and maintain active research programmes in relevant aspects of geology that will involve post-graduate students, attract external funding and be involved in the School administration/ outreach activities. S/he will be expected to develop strong links with industry to promote scholarship and research in their field.

The current context of Higher Education in the South Africa is seeing an increasing focus on the student voice, with funding pressures and competition at a new level. Showing the value of a particular university’s degree and overall offering is more and more critical. In response to this, the University has developed a strategic approach to handling the entire student life cycle that is building on its strengths and positioning it as a leader in the sector.
The role of Pro Vice Chancellor (Student Services) will be to oversee the full student life cycle at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, leading on relevant areas including the whole of the student pastoral journey, including student residential life, extracurricular engagement, and student innovations.

The incumbent is a full member of the senior leadership team, serves on the Executive Management Committee, and reports to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of College is the highest academic leadership position within the University’s College structure and is responsible for leading the academic and research strategy and realising the academic mandate of the University. It is therefore imperative that the DVC leads by example. The role is however dual in nature namely College specific and University- wide, and as part of the Executive Management of the University, the DVC is also responsible for University-wide strategic, financial and risk planning and the successful governance and management of the University in line with its vision, mission and goals.
At College level the DVC oversees the implementation of the institutional strategic plan focusing on the key areas of research, scholarship, teaching and community engagement; ensures proper management and direction of financial, staffing and physical resources, champions employment equity and transformation, and implements consultative, participatory and transparent systems of governance to promote collegiality and build strong teams.
