    Chief Learning Officer

    Description

    Valenture Institute’s Chief Learning Officer is the strategic leader behind Valenture Institute’s academic products. Their primary focus is to facilitate the development of products that deliver value to customers (guardians and learners) as well as the business. The Chief Learning Officer’s portfolio includes academic product strategy and vision, product management, learning design and development, learning technology, user research, and product analytics and metrics.

    This role reports directly into the COO and is a member of Valenture Institute’s executive committee.

    Day-to-day responsibilities include:

    Leadership and Management:

    • Set strategic priorities for the Product Management, Learning Design and Learning Technology functions, and manage the output of these teams against key KPIs.

    • Recruit, retain and develop exceptional leaders within the Product Division.

    • Manage and grow the Product Division in line with business requirements.

    • Work closely with the Chief Technology Officer on the product roadmaps.

    • Work closely with the Chief Marketing Officer on product marketing.

    • Work closely with the Chief Student Experience Officer on academic product delivery.

    Learning Design:

    • Strategically lead on Valenture Institute’s pedagogical approach or learning model, and ensure that the strategies employed are evidence-based and sustainable from an opex perspective.

    • Drive creativity and innovation within the Learning Design function, fostering a deep appreciation for design thinking principles, UX and online learning best practices.

    • Oversee the management of the full production schedule, including scope, cost and quality, for Valenture Institute’s curriculum offerings.

    • Work with the Operations function to plan new curriculum offerings and associated resourcing requirements.

    • Oversee the evaluation of curriculums and ensure that course iteration processes can scale.

    • Ensure that effective quality assurance procedures are in place for all courses in production.

    • Ensure compliance with curriculum standards and specifications (CAPS, Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge, Oxford AQA, American Diploma, and so on)

    • Ensure that market research, user insights, testing and data are informing the direction of the academic products; identify and fill product gaps and generate new ideas that grow market share, and improve customer experience.

    Learning Technology:

    • Ensure that the Learning Technology function is effectively leveraging the native features of the technologies that are managed by this function (Canvas, Moodle, Zoom, Google for Education, Invigilator App, etc).

    • Oversee the build and configuration of modules and courses on their respective Learning Management Systems according to production timelines.

    • Ensure the optimisation of the user experience of the learning platform/s.

    • Ensure that the Learning Technology function is consistently investigating the application of technology to solve pedagogical challenges.

    • Ensure tight alignment between the Learning Design and Learning Technology functions in the production of courses.

    • Ensure that best practices relating to accessibility as well as data protection and privacy are enforced.

    Product Management:

    • Form part of the Product Steering Team and collaborate closely with the Chief Technology Officer on vision setting, product roadmaps and backlog prioritisation.

    • Oversee the Product Management function, ensuring effective representation for different business units and the adoption of consistent product management methodology for scoping, requirements gathering, backlog prioritisation, release planning, UAT, and handover of solutions to business stakeholders.

    Budget Management:

    • Plan the Product Division annual budget with sign off from the COO, and manage according to budget.

    Requirements

    • At least 5 years of experience in an executive or senior Product-focussed role, ideally within an edtech context, with at least three levels reporting up (Directors or Heads, Managers, Individual Contributors) and having managed multiple functional areas.

    • Relevant Business-focussed Honours or Masters level qualification with an Education slant, or vice versa.

    • Familiarity with different curriculums and the secondary education environment would be beneficial.

    • Demonstrated experience leading in complex organisations and effecting change.

    • Demonstrated experience working in a rapidly scaling environment, i.e. where the workforce has doubled year on year.

    • Demonstrated experience working with tech teams.

    • Core attributes: visionary with a bias for activation, a hunger to effect change, creative and methodical in approaching problem solving.

    UCT Online High School | Senior Business Studies Teacher

    Description

    The Senior Teacher role is primarily responsible for motivating, inspiring and empowering their students with high-quality individual and group instruction so that they can reach their full potential. In addition, the Senior Teacher will be responsible for overseeing a team of Tutors and Subject Assessors, and will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality tuition and the student experience. The incumbent should be extremely detail orientated, passionate about helping students succeed, well organised, and familiar with online learning management systems and data management. The ideal candidate should have experience managing a team, a positive personality and growth mindset, excellent interpersonal skills, and an unbridled passion for – and commitment to – changing the world (yes, the world) through high-quality education.

    DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

    Teaching:

    • Significant contact with students to encourage, motivate and empower them to achieve their best.

    • Employ a variety of teaching and instructional methodologies to individuals and groups of students.

    • Conduct lesson planning within your subject to develop appropriate teaching solutions and strategies that target the specific student needs that arise as they progress through the course.

    • Take ownership of assigned students and monitor their academic performance within your subject using data and metrics aligned with key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs primarily reference a student’s demonstrated learning gain as a result of the Senior Teacher’s guidance and support.

    • Monitor at-risk students and the effectiveness of planned interventions (according to our remediation policy which uses RTI) and employ bespoke remediation strategies to enable student academic progress.

    • Work with our Student Mentors and School Counselor to oversee the progress of all students on Individual Support Plans within the allocated student group.

    • Review holistic performance of students on a regular basis.

    • Facilitate and participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, clubs and student organisations.

    Leadership:

    • Mentoring, coaching, developing, and motivating the Tutors in your team to enable them to facilitate transformative learning experiences.

    • Moderate all summative submissions graded by the Subject Assessors.

    • Update student records with socio-emotional, behavioural and academic insights gained through teacher-student interactions.

    • Meet weekly with the Tutors and Subject Assessors in your team to identify student progress, trends and at risk-students.

    • Using subject specifications to ensure that content meets the required examination standards, peer-review cycle tests and exam papers set by the Learning Designer, and determine the efficacy and suitability of content.

    • Consult on the course evaluations process to ensure that feedback is channeled into the Learning Design team according to the ADDIE model.

    Community of practise:

    • Engage in lesson observations with fellow teachers, tutors and your Faculty Lead to maintain quality assurance of instruction in line with Valenture’s Teaching and Learning approach and to enable personal and peer improvement through feedback, coaching and mentorship.

    • Weekly professional development sessions to develop a deep knowledge of the most recent advances of research in the subject you teach, as well as the research on how something can be taught and learned.

    • Engage in the systemic integration of scientific educational knowledge, didactics (or pedagogical content knowledge), and practice to enable teachers to enhance their pedagogical thinking, evidence-based decision making, and engagement in the professional community of educators.

    Requirements

    • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience at secondary school level, with either BEd or PGCE qualification.

    • Experience teaching the CAPS or IEB curriculum will be an advantage.

    • Demonstrated experience in working effectively working with young people to promote their individual academic potential.

    • Adept in a technological environment.

    • Operationally savvy.

    • A good feel for working with assessment data and operational data.

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

    • Must be comfortable working remotely and independently.

    • Stable internet connection required.

    • Police clearance required.

    Tech requirements:

    • Candidate’s own laptop is advantageous.

    • A second screen.

    • A stable internet connection (minimum of a 20mbps line).

The incumbent will play a vital role in ensuring that the development of content is relevant to the learning cohort, of high quality and; developed within the required timelines and the scope of the project. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Responsibilities

    • Use subject policy statements to ensure that content meets the required examination standards, and determine the adequacy or inadequacy of content.

    • Conduct planning and analysis per subject area to recommend appropriate design solutions and strategies for online delivery.

    • Analyse the characteristics of Valenture’s learning management system (LMS) and emerging technologies and use the unique affordances of these technologies to make design decisions.

    • Transfer textbook-based content into a richly augmented format that meets online delivery objectives.

    • Develop educational content from scratch, making use of various sources, into a richly augmented format that meets online delivery objectives.

    • Research and source appropriate reference materials for the development of courses.

    • Collaborate with production specialists to create targeted content in a wide variety of mediums to complement or support the curriculum.

    • Design and create targeted continuous assessment strategies that support students in their progression towards their summative examinations.

    • Work with project management and various operational stakeholders to ensure that deadlines are adhered to and that project communication takes place in a timely and effective manner.

    • Work on evaluation strategies to review the effectiveness of a design strategy, and review content at set intervals as part of Valenture’s approach to continuous improvement.

    • Perform auxiliary tasks, including, but not limited to briefing in graphics, and tracking the use of external assets.

    • Perform peer reviews across subjects and qualifications.
