    Underwriter: Financial Lines (SHA)

    What will make you successful in this role?

    Technical

    • Examine insurance proposal for new and renewal business, gathering and assessing background information, conducting necessary research, evaluating and assessing the risk (including but not limited to coverage analysis, pricing and structure) and discussing/negotiating risks with the broker in order to effectively win or renew the risk. 
    • Calculate possible risk and determine appropriate insurance premiums using underwriting tools and practices, underwriting information and own judgement and experience.
    • Quote within designated authority levels and refer where necessary in accordance with company policy and technical guidelines. 
    • Monitor portfolio performance (of own renewal portfolio) and ensure that renewals, new business, lost business are tracked and that the cancellation reserve does not exceed 2.5%.
    • Set accurate, realistic premium forecasts as required and in a timely manner to enable management to set budgets and monitor performance targets for your own portfolio of accounts.
    • Be able to confidently articulate technical messaging, internally (for referrals) as well as to brokers and clients and to work with colleagues to expand this knowledge and the means to communicate it. 
    • Accurately enter data into company systems and produce management reports that ensure that the company remains aware of the nature and financial impact of all risks written for your own portfolio. 
    • Maintain accurate electronic records for auditing and regulatory purposes.
    • Contribute as required to projects or other initiatives designed to improve the effectiveness or efficiency of the department.
    • Undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested by the Leadership in order that the team achieve its objectives.
    • Adhere to all operational and procedural standards. 
    • Handle accounts queries and credit control queries to the satisfaction of all parties.

    What will make you successful in this role?

    Client and marketing responsibilities 

    • Develop and maintain relationships with brokers and clients at all relevant levels of their businesses.
    • Liaise with brokers, clients and potential clients preparing quotes and negotiating terms as required, writing polices and specifying any conditions that should apply to policies.
    • Visit brokers to discuss renewals and new business with a focus to build relationships and develop market presence in conjunction with Senior colleagues. 
    • Feedback on market intelligence.
    • Respond to queries and resolve to the satisfaction of the affected parties within the scope of authority and / or responsibility.

    Governance

    • Fulfil individual risk and compliance related obligations in adherence to Group and Regulatory guidelines.
    • Provide proactive risk and compliance awareness by reporting any incidents or breaches identified within our compliance requirements.

    Financial Lines 

    • Assessment of financial statements of businesses across a broad spectrum of industries
    • Identification of financial, governance and fraud risks 
    • Research and assess risks utilising data outside of the financial statements (SENS, social media, general news media)

    Qualification and Experience

    • NQF 7 insurance or risk management qualification.
    • Minimum of 12 months technical experience in the relevant line of business as a trainee or under supervision. 
    • FAIS Compliance and RE5 a preference.
    • Basic understanding of insurance industry including the reinsurance market and the terminologies used.
    • Understanding of policy wordings, specifically related to your Line of Business.

    Commercial Underwriter - JHB

    What will make you successful in this role?

    • The handling of escalations outside of binding authority, including technical and complex queries. 
    • Understanding of Risk management and the ability to apply risk Mitigation.
    • Managing profitability through the application of effective policy screening actions on policy and portfolio levels
    • The initiation, provision and implementation of renewal terms and conditions on identified high risk and high exposure policies.

    • FAIS compliance – 120 credits on NQF level 5 Commercial lines
    • Relevant system knowledge:  Persetel & Web-E 
    • Professional membership with IISA (Advantageous)
    • Risk Identification and Assessment programme (RIA - Advantageous)
    • Completed or in the process of completing the Santam Academy courses in commercial insurance - Santam Commercial product training (SMK’s) 
    • Santam Underwriting level 3 (Applicable to Santam Internal Candidates) 
    • Bachelors’ Degree/AIISA/FIISA or comparable short-term insurance qualification (should be completed with or at least have started the Insurance related exams via IISA or Milpark)

    What will you do?

    • Working mainly within Legacy / Procedural and ERP Application Environments produces logical and technical specifications from functional specifications for OO environments.

    • Developing productive relationships with all key personnel involved in growing and developing Specialist Business across the Sanlam Allianz JV, including in country licenses, and their RI captive (ex Saham Re, etc.)

    • Developing productive relationships with other RI broking companies and cedant companies across Africa and International and marketing the entire range of Specialist Solutions products, capacity and expertise where applicable.  

    Qualification and Experience

    • NQF 7 insurance or risk management qualification 
    • Must be passionate about sales and marketing and business growth mindset. 
    • Minimum of 10 years Broker and / or underwriting roles and  experience across Santam Specialist Solutions line of business, with at least 5 years at a senior level.
    • Must be willing and enthusiastic to travel abroad extensively in this role – personal family circumstances will be considered in this regard.

    Head: SA Market Business Development - Santam Specialist Solutions

    What will make you successful in this role?

    This role will:

    • Lead collaboration between respective Specialist Solutions BU’s to identify key targets by means of cross selling from existing portfolios in line with set strategic objectives.
    • Key renewals – promote business retention and packaging of Specialist Solutions offerings.
    • Actively engage with all key supporting brokers, marketing the Specialist Solutions brand and highlighting our value proposition and differentiators.
    • To build and manage relationships with insured clients across the group.

    Strategy

    • Assist in formulating, implementing and co-ordinating a strategy to grow Santam Specialist Solutions presence across the country

    Budget

    • Assist Exec Head in preparing a budget for relevant business area that is in line with the overall company strategy for growth and financial sustainability.

    • Provide monthly feedback to Executive Head on:
    • Broker visits
    • New business written
    • General feedback from market on quotes both competitiveness and Santam Specialist Solutions response time
    • Market intelligence relating to people movement, products, competiveness of premiums
    • Report back to Exec Head for the Business clusters on market developments/changes. 

    Qualification and Experience

    • NQF 7 insurance or risk management qualification 
    • Minimum of 10 years Broker and / or Underwriting engagement experience across Santam Specialist Solutions line of business, with at least 5 years of experience in a senior role.
    • A proven sales and growth-oriented mindset.
    • FAIS Compliance and RE5.
