    Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Mathematics

    Requirements for Lecturer:

    • A PhD (in Pure Mathematics or a related field) at the time of appointment.
    • A record of research that indicates strong potential in the field, including one or more publications in ISI accredited peer reviewed journals and possible conference attendance.
    • The ability to teach a range of courses in Pure Mathematics at both introductory and senior undergraduate level (including service courses) and give specialist lectures at Honours (4th year) level.

    Additional requirements for Senior Lecturer:

    • Substantial lecturing experience of Pure Mathematics courses at undergraduate and/or Honours level.
    • A record of postgraduate supervision, including graduated MSc or PhD students.
    • An established track record as a researcher with national or international impact.
    • Experience as an effective administrator e.g. as a course convenor.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Developing and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Mathematics (within and beyond the Faculty of Science).
    • Developing and pursuing an active research program, including supervising postgraduate students.
    • Course convening, departmental and faculty administration and leadership duties.

    Clinical Educator: Dermatology

    Requirements:

    •  Health Sciences related qualification NQF 8
    • Appropriate registration with the relevant regulatory authority (HPCSA/SANC)
    • 3 years' experience in a Dermatology clinical setting
    • Computer literacy (Ms Word, Ms Excel, Ms PowerPoint, email and internet)
    • Fluency in English, and Afrikaans or isiXhosa
    • Good interpersonal, communication and management skills
    • Keen interest in research and community outreach programmes
    • Interest as a learning facilitator and teacher.

    Advantageous

    • MBChB degree

    Responsibilities

    The Clinical Educator will be required to:

    • Be part of the ward team in phototherapy, topical skin and wound care, as well as patch testing
    • Use above skills to provide practical training to 5th year undergraduate medical students
    • Provide co-supervision to 4th and 5th year undergraduate medical students during their Special Study Modules
    • Provide primary dermatology teaching: 3rd to 6th medical students and registrars
    • Provide tutoring to Dermatology nurses (and occasionally to Allied Health professionals)
    • Coordinate the Dermatology Nursing short course (and diploma when re-instated)
    • Coordinate the Community dermatology outreach program
    • Offer teaching and research assistance for collaborative research projects within the division
    • Travel to community clinics in the Cape Town area when teaching is required
    • Participate in divisional academic activities that improve teaching, learning and research
    • Independent travel to and between respective learning sites.

    Director: Electron Microscope Unit (EMU)

    Requirements for the position:

    At both levels:

    • Possession of a PhD;
    • Leadership of an active, well-funded research programme;
    • Substantial experience in the use of electron microscopy and other imaging and analysis techniques in research, as evidenced by a record of original research publications in peer-reviewed journals;
    • Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills;
    • Experience in managing and enabling the professional development of young scientists.

    At Associate Professor Level:

    • A comprehensive academic track record including a strong publication record;
    • At least five years’ relevant experience in an academic and/or applied research environment;
    • An excellent track record of raising funds for research as co- or lead investigator.

    At Professor Level:

    • A comprehensive academic track record and a strong publication record including proven international recognition for specialist expertise in a particular area of academic scholarship. The greatest emphasis will be placed on academic work undertaken during the past five years;
    • At least ten years’ relevant experience in an academic and/or applied research environment, with an excellent reputation and leadership in the field and wider community;An excellent
    • track record of raising funds for research as lead investigator, including international grants.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Providing direction to the strategic growth and multi-disciplinary activities of the Unit;
    • Marketing and the promotion of the Unit in the interests of the users of the facility;
    • Conducting high quality scholarly research in an area that is closely related to advanced imaging, and supervision of postgraduate students;
    • Educating researchers and postgraduate students in the application and use of advanced electron microscopy and other imaging and analysis techniques;
    • Formulating grant proposals for new equipment and major long-term research and infrastructural projects;
    • Developing and maintaining a business plan that aligns with the research support goals and services for the Unit, and ensuring its responsible financial management;
    • Forging synergies between the Unit, UCT academic departments and other entities within and outside the University;
    • Providing scientific leadership within the Unit; and
    • Managing research teams.

    Director: The Harry Crossley Children's Nursing Development Unit

    Requirements:

    • A Professional Nurse with 5 years’ paediatric experience.
    • A PhD in a relevant field (e.g. nursing, health professions, public health, sociology, social anthropology, social development).
    • A strong and sustained research track record, including peer-reviewed publications consistent with appointment at Associate Professor or Professor level (UCT benchmark: at least 10 publications over the past 5 years for Associate Professor).
    • A demonstrable track record of securing and/or contributing significantly to the development and management of substantial external funding, including multi-year grants.
    • A demonstrable track record of securing and managing substantial external funding, including multi-year grants, ideally at scale comparable to or exceeding R10 million per annum.
    • Experience in developing and sustaining strategic partnerships across academic, health system, government, and non-governmental sectors.
    • Knowledge and experience of current debates in African health systems, higher education, policy and workforce development.  
    • Ability to lead a diverse team and create an inclusive and supportive organisational culture.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    Advantages:

    • A qualification in paediatric nursing.
    • Experience in postgraduate programme leadership (e.g. convening or directing Master’s programmes).
    • A track record of successful postgraduate supervision (Master’s and/or PhD).
    • Experience in participatory methods, applied practice improvement, implementation science.
    • Experience of measurement and evaluation processes.
    • Experience working at national level across multiple African countries or regions.
    • Experience leading the development and securing of major grants at scale (e.g. comparable to or exceeding R10 million per annum).

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide strategic and intellectual leadership of the 2027–2029 strategic plan through Afrocentric transformative and socially engaged education, responsive research and evidence-based practice.
    • Lead postgraduate education and academic development, including programme convenership, contribution to Master’s-level teaching, and innovation (including online and blended delivery), plus  supervision of postgraduate students.  
    • Lead and grow a high-impact research programme, advancing Afrocentric scholarship and strengthening the Unit’s international profile through the generation and translation of evidence into contextually appropriate guidelines, models, and tools for practice, and through the academic development of staff and students.
    • Develop the Unit’s position as sectoral lead contributing to global knowledge about African health systems and ensuring that the Unit’s work informs policy and system-level transformation, through leading continent-wide communities of practice, advancing health workforce research and fostering partnerships with researchers, educators, ministries, and funders.
    • Ensure organisational sustainability through strategic fundraising, directing the growth and stewardship of a multi-year fundraising strategy, currently equating to budgeted R12 million per annum.
    • Develop and manage a high-performing, diverse team through a strong ethos of excellence, collaboration and accountability, and with an inclusive, supportive organisational culture.
