    Plant Caretaker - Innovation Africa@UP

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Preparing, planting, caring and harvesting of plants in trial;
    • Maintaining and cleaning of units;
    • Assisting researchers and students with trials;
    • Adherence to health and safety regulations when conducting tasks.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Grade 10 with at least 1 year(s) proven experience in:
    • Caring for plants in an agricultural environment;
    • Pesticide, fertiliser and nutrient application;
    • Irrigation of plants in trials.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Proficient knowledge and experience taking care of plants in trials;
    • Proficient experience in operating implements and machinery to plant, care and harvest plants;
    • Proficient computer skills in MSOffice suites;
    • Proficient literacy and numerical competencies.

    Faculty Student Advisor - Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences

    The incumbent’s key responsibilities will:

    • Provide general student support to postgraduate students local and international;
    • Provide support to the Deputy Dean: Teaching and Postgraduate Studies in all matters pertaining to Teaching and Postgraduate Studies;
    • Advise students on module choices, study paths and associated career options;
    • Provide academic advising services to postgraduate students in the Faculty through possible communication mediums such telephone, online platforms or chat applications;
    • Track students’ performance and direct them to available academic assistance
    • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders;
    • Liaise with and direct postgraduate students to support structures at the University such as finance, student support, residence and others;
    • Liaise and support administrative personnel in the Faculty in terms of postgraduate bursaries;
    • Create a data base to monitor registered postgraduate student numbers and postgraduate student progress;
    • Co-ordinate activities during the orientation session for postgraduate students;
    • Conduct and coordinate academic support-related workshops to invited students i.e.  
    • Postgraduate Support Sessions that are offered over the course of the year;
    • Assist and support academic staff with the Faculty Research Day – a platform for postgraduate students to showcase their research;
    • Work closely with staff in the Faculty to provide holistic support to students in need;
    • Assist with the establishment of holistic student engagement and support in the Faculty; and
    • Identify ‘at risk’ students and prepare and conduct special sessions/tutorials for them and manage data on student interactions.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Master’s degree in Educational Psychology or Psychology or Social Work; and
    • Three years’ experience as a tutor, mentor or advisor at a tertiary institution.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Empathy and passion for improving the wellbeing of others;
    • Advanced level of skill in the use of Microsoft packages, Google Suite of applications and the internet, and a willingness;

    Lecturer/Snr Lecturer/Assoc Prof/Prof - Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (3 posts) (Re-advertisement)

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    It will be expected of the successful candidates to:

    • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department;
    • Supervise final year undergraduate project students and postgraduate Honours, Masters and PhD students;
    • Conduct research as a member of a research group in the Department and publish in leading accredited journals;
    • Raise and manage additional funding from national and international funding agencies and industry to support the activities of the relevant research group;
    • Expand existing research programmes or initiate new research programmes;
    • Perform assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature).

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Lecturer:

    • A BEng degree from a university of which the undergraduate programme is recognised by the Washington accord or is recognised by ECSA to be equivalent;
    • A Masters’ degree in Engineering that follows on the previous qualification;
    • Teaching or industry related experience
    • 1 Publication (peer reviewed article or peer reviewed conference paper) or
    • Book chapter(s), recognized articles outputs or industry recognized outputs in a commensurate field.

    Senior Lecturer:

    • Same as for Lecturer, plus;
    • A PhD degree in Engineering that follows on the previous qualification;
    • At least three years tertiary education experience or three years industry experience with some involvement in tertiary education;
    • At least 2 articles published in DHET accredited journals or a DHET accredited book;
    • At least 2 other publication outputs (peer reviewed conference paper(s) / book chapter(s) / industry recognized outputs in a commensurate field;
    • Supervision / co-supervision of Master’s students to completion or proven management experience in industry.

    Associate Professor:

    • Same as for Senior Lecturer, plus;
    • At least 6 years tertiary education experience or 6 years industry experience with some involvement in tertiary education;
    • Experience in curriculum / strategy development and innovation;
    • Evidence of sustained publications output;
    • Majority of recent publications should be in WoS / Scopus / IBSS journals (past 7 years);
    • Evidence of at least 3 research Master’s OR 6 coursework Master’s mini-dissertations successfully completed (supervised or co-supervised);
    • Evidence of Doctoral student supervision;
    • Evidence of conducting reviewer duties for journals and/or conferences.

    Professor:

    • Same as for Associate Professor, plus;
    • At least eight years’ experience at a tertiary academic institution or industry related experience;
    • Evidence of successful doctoral student completion;
    • Evidence of conducting reviewer duties for ISI/Scopus indexed journals;
    • A record of previous undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching experience, including graduation of Doctoral students;
    • A well-established and internationally recognised research record supported by publications in high quality peer reviewed journals.

    • Preference will be given to candidates who have teaching and research expertise that complement the Department’s needs;

    Academic Success Coach (Faculty of Humanities)

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for providing support to students especially those at risk of failing, in order for such students to succeed. These students’ progress will be monitored and reported on.

    Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Academic advising (including but not limited to) participating in the orientation of new students, advising on curriculum changes/module changes/drops/adds and withdrawals;
    • Supporting students identified as being at risk of not succeeding;
