    Analyst (Grade 7), Advocacy Division

    Job Description

    The Competition Commission seeks to appoint an Analyst in the Advocacy Division. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for supporting the Competition Commission in investigating and resolving competition cases through advocacy and to provide policy and legislative responses and analysis. The position requires the individual to be adaptable, self-starting, inquisitive and relational. The job has some specialist or technical aspects and will expose the successful candidate to different aspects of competition law and economics.

    Minimum Requirements

    We are looking for a dynamic, hardworking and a committed individual who meets the following requirements:

    • A completed Honours Degree or equivalent in Economics, Law or Social Sciences.
    • A Masters Degree in Economics, Law or Social Sciences added advantage
    • At least 4 years’ experience in a competition, public policy or legislative environment.
    • Ability to conduct research and undertake complex investigations within multidisciplinary teams.
    • Experience in information gathering and analysis.

    Other considerations:

    • Practical work exposure to area of expertise, such as sector regulation or competition law or economics, will be an added advantage.

    Key Responsibilities

    The main responsibilities of the incumbent will, inter alia, include: 

    • Assist in conducting investigations regarding possible contraventions of the Act and relevant advocacy activities.
    • Assist in conducting research and policy analysis of the regulatory landscape and make recommendations.

    Economist, Economic Research Bureau Division (Grade 7)

    Job Description

    The Competition Commission seeks to recruit dynamic, hard-working and committed individuals to fill the role of an economist in the Economic Research Bureau Division.     • An LLB Degree or equivalent qualification and Admission as an Attorney / Advocate (if Admitted as an Advocate, must have served and completed pupillage).

    • To provide strategic and substantive guidance on competition cases handled by team members in order to ensure expeditious and effective prosecution of firms that contravene the Competition Act, and effective presentation of mergers and acquisition transactions.
    • To provide and supervise the provision of timely and well researched legal advice to the Commission.
    • To manage and litigate cases before the Competition Tribunal, Competition Appeal Court, High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.
    • To instruct, brief and manage attorneys and counsel representing the Commission.
    • To assist in negotiating and concluding consent and settlement agreements; and
    • To co-ordinate, facilitate and execute activities to build internal capacity for legal compliance, drafting and litigation.

    Minimum Requirements:

    We are looking for a committed individual who meets the following requirements:

    • Honours Degree in Economics or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree. Masters in Economics or LLM will be given preference.
    • Minimum 6 years’ experience in a legal environment or economic analysis, 8 years’ experience recommended.

    • To conduct research and provide advice to decision makers on the impact of mergers in the economy,
    • To monitor merger conditions,
    • To lead, supervise and provide guidance to a small team of merger analysts,
    • To assist the Divisional Manager with the strategic planning, staff management, and development as well as general administration of the Mergers and Acquisitions Division.
