    Lecturer/Senior Lecturer - Department of Pharmacology - Faculty of Health Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Teaching basic, clinical and regulatory pharmacology at tertiary level including the theoretical basis of scientific principles, experimental design, and regulatory affairs;
    • Be intimately involved in research in a related field, including the establishment of a sustainable research niche aligned to the Departmental focus areas, and publication thereof;
    • Acting as supervisor for postgraduate students;
    • Being involved with curriculum development/innovation.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    LECTURER

    • A Healthcare Profession’s qualification with associated MMed degree;
    • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
    • One DHET accredited publication;
    • One years’ teaching experience in Pharmacology, Pharmacy or Regulatory Pharmacology.

    SENIOR LECTURER

    • A Healthcare Profession’s qualification with associated MMed degree;
    • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa;
    • Three years’ teaching experience in Pharmacology, Pharmacy or Regulatory Pharmacology;
    • At least three accredited publications (Ideally more, preferably in last 3 years and in ISI journals);

    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor - Department of Civil Engineering

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    It will be expected of the successful candidates to:

    • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department;
    • Supervise final year undergraduate project students and postgraduate Honours, Masters and PhD students;
    • Conduct research as a member of a research group in the Department and publish in leading accredited journals;

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • The purpose of this role is to establish and promote a quality service culture within the department by facilitating and advancing stakeholder relationship management and governance processes.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian;
    • Must be registered or willing to register in 2024 for Masters programme – MSc in veterinary science (relevant production animal focus) or MMedVet degree (Gyn) and be able to graduate in reasonable time;
    • A minimum of three years of veterinary clinical experience predominantly in reproduction aspects of ruminants (case log required); and
    • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development

    Senior Lecturer:

    • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • Registration with the SAVC as a specialist;
    • An appropriate MMedVet-degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification in ruminant medicine and herd health (e.g. MMedVet Bovine Health and Production or MMedVet Gyn);
    • Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years’ experience in predominantly reproduction aspects in ruminants (case log); and
    • At least two full peer-reviewed paper in an accredited scientific journal as author or co-author.

    Or

    • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
    • MSc degree with particular focus on production animals;
    • Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years’ experience in predominantly reproduction aspects in ruminants (case log) post acquiring a Master’s degree;
    • Five or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author in the last five years. The research should be focused towards a particular subject area (e.g. specific disease or condition) and not be broad.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work;
    • Skills in herd or population level problem investigation, management interventions and consultation;

    • MSc degree with particular focus on production animal aspects;
    • Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian;
    • Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years’ experience in predominantly Ruminant medicine and Flock health aspects (case log required) post acquiring a Master’s degree;
    • Five or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author in the last five years. The research should be focused towards a particular subject area (e.g. specific disease or condition) and not be broad.

    Associate Professor:

    • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • An MMedVet (Ruminant Medicine and Flock Health)-degree or equivalent specialty board certification currently registered or registerable with the SAVC and a PhD degree;
    • Five years of veterinary clinical experience as a specialist in Flock health management and
    • At least five full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author or co-author in the last five years.
    • The research should be focused towards a particular subject area (e.g. specific disease or condition) and not be broad.
    • Case studies should not make up more than 20% of the research papers. (Case studies are papers describing a unique clinical condition and its management in a small number of patients and does not include large meta-analysis studies where a large number of clinical cases are evaluated).

    Or

    • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
    • MSc degree and a PhD with particular focus on production animals. In exceptional cases: MSc with significant professional recognition (supported by both national and international peer reviews).
    • At least seven years of veterinary clinical experience as a specialist in Flock health management and
    • Ten or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author, with five of these publications being in the last three years. The research should be focused towards a particular subject area (e.g. specific disease or condition) and not be broad. Case studies should not make up more than 20% of the research papers.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work with an emphasis on ruminant herd health aspects;
    • Research interest appropriate to the position;
    • Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PHD in reasonable time in a field relative to the discipline of veterinary reproduction;
    • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
    • Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools;
    • Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience;
    • Exposure to research in an appropriate field.

    Clinical Assistant: Wildlife Diseases - Department of Production Animal Studies

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

    • Registering for and pursuing a postgraduate degree (MMedVet Wildlife diseases – coursework), that includes advanced clinical training, coursework and a research project; 
    • Actively participating in the clinical/experiential training of veterinary and veterinary nursing students while rendering services in the clinics of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, on farms and in satellite clinics;
    • Participating in providing a 24-hour clinical service which includes community engagement activities as delegated by the Head of Department;
    • Performing departmental administrative duties as delegated by the Section head/Head of Department.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A BVSc/BVMCh degree or an appropriate equivalent veterinary qualification;
    • Registration as a veterinarian with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) or authorised to be enrolled for MMedVet studies;
    • Applicable experience of at least two years as a veterinarian, or training of at least one year in the specific field as an intern at a recognised training facility;
    • Compliance with entry requirements for a Masters’ programme with a commitment to enrol for an MMedVet (Wildlife diseases) degree and to complete within prescribed time frame;

    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer - (Two Positions) - Department of Actuarial Science - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Lecturing and participating in curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
    • Participating in the undertaking and supervision of research projects;
    • Actively contributing towards research development and producing research output to attract research funding;
