    Advisor Higher Education

    Duties    
    The meaningful integration of learning technologies in programmes and modules in partnership with faculties. This includes support for quality teaching, learning and assessment (T-L-A) and for the professional development of academics, with a focus on the use of learning technologies in T-L-A (including blended- and online learning). Duties will include:

    • Collaborating with colleagues on Centre and institutional projects;
    • Closely cooperating with faculties;
    • Providing advice, support and training to lecturers;
    • Monitoring, evaluating and research;
    • Digital learning and teaching resources design;
    • Technical and administrative support relating to projects and training;
    • Developing and managing fully online / blended learning modules or programmes of the Centre;
    • Focusing on developing and researching the CLT and SU's approach to Open Educational Resources and Practices (OERs and OEPs). 

    Job Requirements      

    • Master's degree in education, academic development or learning technologies in education;
    • Two years' working experience in academic development (e.g., individual digitally-based support or consultation, facilitation of workshops, seminar presentations, etc.) in the South African higher education sector with a focus on the integration of learning technologies in Teaching-Learning-Assessment (e.g., blended learning, online learning, etc.). Here we mean supporting lecturers at tertiary institutions in their duties to integrate learning technologies in their teaching;
    • Experience in the design and development of fully online courses;
    • Excellent verbal, presentation and written communication skills;
    • Strong interpersonal skills in the context of a team;
    • Project management experience;
    • Proven experience in the design of digital educational content (e.g., videos, SCORMs, podcasts, interactive digital content);Proficiency in relevant software (e.g. LMSs like Moodle, the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe suite, Camtasia, iSpring, etc.);
    • Proven scholarly and critical-reflective orientation towards learning technologies (e.g., publications and conference presentations). 
    • As part of the interview process, shortlisted candidates could be expected to perform a task based assesment test based on the requirements as set out in the advertisement. 

    Recommendation        

    • A qualification in academic development, education, or an educational technology field;
    • A PhD;
    • Experience and proficiency in the use and pedagogical support of a Learning Management System as well as other learning technologies;
    • Experience of teaching in higher education;
    • Experience in monitoring and evaluation;
    • Experience in educational research;
    • Experience in managing (a) learning designer(s) and learning design processes;
    • Exprience in the develop and research of Open Educational Resources or Practices (OERs and/or OEPs).

    Lecturer: Department of General Linguistics

    Duties

    • Developing, renewing, and presenting undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
    • Postgraduate supervision;
    • Publishing in recognised international research outlets or on similar publication platforms;
    • Applying for external research funding;
    • Serving on departmental and Faculty committees;
    • Actively participating in the research, teaching, and social impact activities of the Department;
    • Performing administrative tasks associated with these activities.

    Job Requirements        

    • PhD (completed or evidence of near completion) in Linguistics;
    • First language fluency in one of South Africa's official languages other than English or Afrikaans, and the ability to function in a multilingual environment;
    • Specialisation (at PhD level) in the morphosyntax of one of South Africa's official languages other than English or Afrikaans;
    • Teaching experience in morphosyntax and at least one of the following: language acquisition, phonetics/phonology, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, semantics, sign language linguistics, or sociolinguistics;
    • At least two years' teaching experience in Linguistics in higher education;
    • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in coordinating, developing, and strengthening the academic project of the Department.

    Ethics Administrative Officer and Personal Assistant

    Duties

    • Handling general health research ethics enquiries;
    • Managing the central ethics e-mail inbox;
    • Minute taking during meetings;
    • Updating the Health Research Ethics Committee (HREC) website;
    • Managing and maintaining a chronological filing system;
    • Marketing and material development;
    • Managing HREC membership;
    • Monitoring and maintaining adequate supplies for EXCO meetings and preparing the committee room prior to meetings;
    • Monitoring consultation requests and record keeping;
    • Secretary to the Head of the Research Health Ethics Office.

    Job Requirements   

    • Grade 12 certificate;
    • Training and/or at least three year's relevant experience in office or research administration in a higher education environment/setting;

    • Excellent attention to detail;
    • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively within a team;

    Transformation Communication Officer

    Duties

    • Conducting interviews and/or research for compiling content for any of the following: coverage of transformation related campus events and student life; media responses; articles for various campus publications (digital and printed);
    • Pro-actively liaising with various stakeholders to source content and ideas for transformation related articles;
    • Rewriting copy for different target audiences and platforms;
    • Managing the TO's website, including the development and management of an online `SU Transformation Hub';
    • Managing the TO's social media communication, including marketing material for TO engagements aimed at various external and internal stakeholders;
    • Developing and rolling out transformation related campaigns, usually in partnership with other SU environments such as Employment Equity and the Equality Unit;
    • Assisting with the development of cost effective and innovative materials to support the work of the TO, such as training materials and information booklets;
    • Liaising with graphic design service providers to package content for TO reports and other documents;
    • Editing, translating and proofreading (in English and Afrikaans) support for various types of editorial material generated within the TO. The TO has access to professional editing and translations services, but deadlines for media releases often necessitate immediate translation. 

    Job Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in journalism or corporate communication, or equivalent qualification;
    • At least three years' experience in journalism or corporate communication;
    • Knowledge of transformation and social justice issues;
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
    • Computer proficiency in MS Office;
    • Knowledge of digital, printed and other communication channels, principles and practices, including social media;
    • The ability to write very well and to function effectively in a multilingual and multicultural environment;
    • Meticulous execution of functions and attention to detail;
    • The ability to work independently, and in a team, and to use own initiative;
    • The ability to function well under pressure and meet deadlines;
    • The ability to appreciate and interpret divergent views in the midst of conflict and crisis situations.

    Lecturer: Language and Literacy (Afrikaans) - Foundation Phase

    Duties

    • Developing and evaluating learning and teaching materials for the BEd Foundation Phase programme;
    • Developing education students' skills in teaching emerging and early literacy;
    • Research and publication in selected speciality areas;
    • Supervision of postgraduate students;
    • Administrative responsibilities relevant to the job level concerned;
    • Rendering appropriate services to the University and the teaching community.

    Job Requirements 

    • A relevant BEd or equivalent teaching qualification with specialisation in early childhood development or foundation phase teaching;
    • A relevant master's degree;
    • A proposed schedule of research publication being planned, or the potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals;
    • Willingness to supervise postgraduate students;
    • Thorough knowledge of current changes, policies and practices in early childhood development or foundation phase teaching and education;
    • Relevant experience in early childhood development or foundation phase teaching in the primary school context. 

    Recommendation

    • A PhD or proof of registration for a relevant PhD (past proposal stage);
    • Emerging scholarship around literacy development;
    • Language skills for learning and teaching across the curriculum, especially in the foundation phase;
    • Experience and/or knowledge of computer-assisted instruction;
    • Published articles in peer-reviewed and indexed journals;
    • Peer-reviewed papers delivered at recognised education conferences;
    • At least three years' relevant experience in early childhood development or foundation phase teaching in higher education.
