    Candidate Civil Engineer

    Job Purpose:

    Participates in various complex form of Engineering works programme and project management discussions and decision making processes.

    Key Responsibility Areas:

    • Acquires knowledge and applies principles and techniques associated with the development and presentation of technical designs for complex forms of engineering work.

    Job Purpose:

    The effective management, development and functioning of the Technical Training division.

    Key Responsibility Areas:

    • Ascertains the appropriate number of Apprentices, Learner Technicians and Engineers.
    • Develops suitable recruitment criteria.
    • Ensures that financial resources are budgeted for and approved at the beginning of each financial year.
    • Compiles and updates all contractual documents.
    • Assists with accommodation, induction and support of all new recruits by keeping a database of suitable accommodation.
    • Liaises with the relevant statutory bodies.
    • Ensures that proper programs are put in place in consultation with Engineering Managers to ensure that practical training within EThekwini Municipality is carried out timeously.
    • Sets up systems to ensure that all elective subjects to be studied by contracted engineering students are relevant to the future requirements of EThekwini Electricity.
    • Develops a programme to ensure that all vacation work undertake by contracted engineering students is co-ordinated.
    • Implements a system to ensure all Apprentices, Learner Technicians and Engineers are carefully monitored during their probationary period.
    • Develops and maintains the program to ensure the correct rotation and duration meets the practical requirements of developing well-trained Apprentices, Technicians and Engineers.
    • Updates and maintains all personal history files of each contracted engineering student, Apprentices, Technicians and Engineers.

    Essential Requirements:

    • National Diploma in Electrical Engineering or National N Diploma.
    • Valid motor vehicle drivers license (Code B).
    • 4 Years relevant experience in Training and Development in a large electricity undertaking.

    Preferred Requirements:

    • In possession of a Training and Development Diploma.
    • 6 years relevant experience in Training and Development in a large electricity undertaking

    Special Conditions:

    40 hours, 5 day week. Incumbents must be prepared to work overtime when required to meet the exigencies of the service. Permanent locomotion allowance or departmental transport at the discretion of the Head: Electricity. As per the PPE schedule.

    Job Purpose:

    Essential Requirements:

    • NQF Level 7 - Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering and registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Construction Project Manager with the relevant statutory registering bodies.
    • A Valid motor vehicle driver’s license (Code EB).
    • Computer Literacy.
    • 6 Years relevant experience in Development Project Management.

    Preferred Requirements:

    Chief Training Officer

    Job Purpose:

    To manage and co-ordinate all functions of the Training Centre (System Operations) and to plan, design and market all courses presented by the Training Centre.

    Key Responsibility Areas:

    • Undertakes responsibility for all training activities for the current and future requirements.
    • Responsible for direction and control of all staff of the centre as well as administrative functions of the centre. Markets the training centres courses, learning programme, etc to local authorities, Eskom, Telkom, major industries and other Units.

    • Recommends and approves applications for electricians to be deemed competent or authorised persons from medium to high voltages.
    • Promotion of system operation safety to electricity unit staff, local authorities and industrial customers. Undertakes special projects, including productivity improvement programmes and training related assignments.

    Essential Requirements:

    • National Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering or an alternative qualification, acceptable to the Head: Electricity.
    • Must be authorised without restriction in terms of the System Operating Regulations to operate on MV and HV systems or be in a position to become authorised to operate on HV systems within 6 months of appointment.
    • Valid motor vehicle drivers license (Code B).
    • 5 Years all round knowledge of the operations of an electricity supply authority.
    • Considerable practical "hands on" experience (minimum 7 years) in all aspects of electrical reticulation which must include switching, isolating and earthing of mains and apparatus operating at high voltage levels ranging from 220 to 11000 volts.
    • Pass a proficiency test set by the department to prove sufficient general knowledge of all aspects of electrical reticulation, distribution and transmission with particular emphasis on operating procedures.

    Preferred Requirements:

    • Deemed medium voltage competent, in terms of the Safety Rules, on overhead mains, underground mains and substation maintenance.
    • Knowledge of and experience in HV transmission and substations, including authorisation to operate on HV systems.

    Special Conditions:

    • 40 hour, 5 day week.
    • Be prepared to work overtime when required to meet the exigencies of the service.
    • Permanent locomotion allowance or departmental transport at the discretion of the Head: Electricity.
    • Protective Clothing: As per PPE Schedule.
