    Faculty Officer (Dean's Office: Community & Health Sciences)

    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

    • The Faculty of Community and Health Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is situated on two campuses namely; Main campus and Bellville campus. The Faculty is one of the leading institutions for the education of community and health sciences professionals in South Africa.
    • The Faculty offers professional qualifications in Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Social Work, Community Development, Inter-professional Education, Interdisciplinary Studies of Children Families and Society (CISCFS), Complementary Medicine, Public Health and Biokinetics. We currently have a position available for an experienced administrator at our Faculty office to be responsible for the Faculty’s public relations, events and related administration. Reporting to the Faculty Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for and not limited to: monitoring and updating of faculty website and  social media platforms; marketing and marketing material; organise special Faculty staff and students’ events; compile faculty newsletter and annual report; organise the Deans annual awards ceremony; responsible for faculty’s recruitment drives and open days; responsible for Faculty’s orientation programmes; provide PR support to faculty’s community outreach programmes.
    • The incumbent will also be the committee officer for Faculty Board and liaise regularly with the Deanery, student enrolment management unit, ICS, departments, staff members, students, faculties, tertiary institutions and external organisations.

    Minimum Requirements

    •  A Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) and at least three years Higher Education academic administration experience 
    •  Expertise in MS office with advanced Excel functionalities and familiarity with Google products and applications
    •  Excellent office management, minute taking and report writing skills
    •  Experience with data capturing, processing and reporting.
    •  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
    •  Proven ability in utilising digital media electronic tools for effective communication
    •  At least three years’ experience in Marketing
    •  A valid driver’s licence

    Manager: Safety, Health, Environment & Emergency Services (SHE&E)

    The Risk and Compliance Department seeks an assertive, strong, compliance focused individual, who is able to work independently as well as co-ordinate teams, to take responsibility for the identification, implementation, maintenance of and adherence to SHE & Emergency Services (SHE&E) requirements within UWC and its satellites.

    Reporting to the Director: Risk & Compliance, we invite suitable candidates who meet the minimum requirements to apply for this position.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

    • Provide leadership with regard to the rendering of quality SHE&E Services that includes the smooth running of the SHE&E and relevant compliance requirements
    • Ensure efficient and effective functioning of the SHE&E department and achievement of objectives
    • Effective management of the SHE&E department's administration and resources
    • Design and implement policies and related business processes
    • Perform analysis and interpretations of relevant data on related risks and incidences and reporting accordingly
    • Interpret policies, legislation, regulations and instructions in respect of pre- emergency risk reduction and post-emergency recovery in order to facilitate its integration into the UWC emergency preparedness policy and implementation
    • Manage Occupational health safety and provide direction in the management of Health and Safety Committees
    • Manage Environmental Health and Safety and provide direction in the management thereof.
    • In conjunction with HR- Training and Development be responsible for the training of staff and users/committee members in health and Safety.
    • Manage medical care to students, visitors and staff and ensuring that call-outs to patients for assistance and medical care is adequately provided
    • Manage Occupational Health and Safety investigations and statistics at all campuses by determining viability of safety investigations and formal communication thereof to the Director: Risk & Compliance and relevant stakeholders
    • Responsible for relevant Health and Safety investigations in terms of planning and implementation
    • Providing reports to line management, various stakeholders and governance structures
    • Design and implementation of appropriate policies and business processes
    • Responsible for the management of Fire safety and relevant compliance
    • Guide and Support all Events Safety including the monitoring of event plans and quality
    • Assist in the management, the planning and coordination of waste management including stakeholder and institutional compliance
    • Manage water management safety
    • Manage food hygiene safety
    • Responsible for awareness campaigns and training to relevant user groups
    • Record keeping of incidents as maintained on the institutional system (GV Chase) and various reporting requirements

    Minimum Requirements

    • Grade 12
    • A Degree in Health, Safety and Environment NQF7 or equivalent in the Health and Safety environment
    • 5 years management experience 
    • Valid Driver’s license (08) with two years accident free experience 
    • Valid Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
    • Registration with The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) will be advantages, but will be required to be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.
    • PSIRA registration will be advantages, but will be required to be obtained within the first 6 months of employment.
    • Chemical or biological or similar experience in waste management would be an advantage 

    Required competencies:

    • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations as amended
    • Knowledge of local municipal by-laws
    • Knowledge of safety standards PC and Software literacy Experience in conducting Risk Assessments

    Teaching & Learning Specialist

    The T&L Specialist will be responsible for developing and facilitating the implementation of the faculty Teaching and Learning plan.  

    The successful incumbent will be responsible for: 

    • Working closely with Departments with regards to the design and implementation of Teaching and Learning strategies and interventions 
    • Assisting departments with the development of new programmes and review of existing ones 
    • Assisting Departments to internally review and reflect on their Teaching and Learning practices 
    • Collaborating with Departments to implement curriculum and academic literacy initiatives, as well as facilitating the integration of academic literacy into undergraduate curricula 
    • Facilitating the development of disciplinary and faculty graduate attributes, and monitoring the incorporation of these into Teaching and Learning activities and assessment tasks 
    • Facilitating and disseminating innovative pedagogical practices within Departments in the Faculty 
    • Initiating and implementing professional staff development in the area of Teaching and Learning 
    • Supporting research into the challenges of teaching and learning in the Faculty and co-developing strategies to address these
    • Managing the faculty Academic and Tutor Coordinator and the faculty Graduate Assistant Coordinator 
    • Responsible for implementation of Faculty Operating Plan as related to Learning and Teaching
    • Other related duties as assigned by the Dean/Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning 

    Minimum Requirements

    • A Doctoral degree  
    • Relevant expertise in key areas of Teaching and Learning practice and theory in a higher education context  
    • Record of academic publications (at least 3 peer-reviewed or accredited journal articles)
